00 Civic, 5SPD/D16y8 - Head gasket is blown and need advice
Hi guys!
I would like to pose a question of opinion. Just bought a 2000 Civic Coupe, 5SPD with a D16y8. Head gasket is blown, when I first looked at the car it had no oil or coolant in the dang thing. I am a professional technician but only really used to the chevy/ford game so I am wondering..... what would you do in this case? What is the cheapest route to getting this car back on the road, IE roll new bearings in and replace the head/head gasket. Or should I buy a used motor for it. And if the used motor option what can I expect to pay for said D16?
Thanks in advance.

havent started disassembly on the motor yet, so not much noticable on warpage lol. And whats the dollar figure on a good y8?
Y8s aren't that easy to find, they're by no means rare, but they aren't everywhere either. Also there are 4 different versions of the Y8 '96 - '98 and '99 - '00 as well as automatic and 5 speed, the block and rotating assembly is the same for all. '99 - '00 has air injection and automatics use a different intake manifold, throttlebody and idle air control valve than 5 speeds. You can use any of the 4 but if it's different from what you have you'll have to swap some old parts back over. Expect to pay $250 - $500, but realize that prices vary a lot depending on location.
Motor still spins over, but spins very slowly, my concern is the lack of oil screwing up the bottom end. But with a blown head gasket I dont know of a way to check the pistons rings. Compression testing wouldnt work that well lol.

Generally what happens once these things have been overheated is the oil rings get stuck in the ringlands and they'll smoke, the compression rings will still be free though most of the time. The head and block surface will usually warp, the headgasket is 3 layer steel so they don't normally blow in the typical sense, the head warps and lifts instead. I never had great luck putting headgaskets in D-series engines, they seem to last about 6 months to a year before they blow another headgasket. If you resurface the head and the block you may have better luck, especially if you replace the headbolts with ARP headstuds. If you decide you want to put a headgasket in it use an OEM Honda gasket or one from KP Gasket Co. Don't use a FelPro or you can count on it not lasting.
