Default Turbo Type R

Hey all,
I am soon to buy an 88-91 CRX. I was planning on swapping in a new motor for it. The car will be used for drag racing. I was hoping to put in a b18c5 with a turbo but was wondering if that would be extremely hard since I have not heard but one or two people on this board have that. Should I be looking at another motor to turbocharge for my car? Or is the b18c5 all i really need. Also I know that it is about 5 grand for the motor, about how much for the turbo? I looked at a Drag Gen 3 kit was 2-3 grand, any other turbos for the type R motor? What is the estimate on how much it would cost to replace the pistons/rings/feul/suspension/ just the basic stuff you know. Thanks for the help.

YES. I have looked through the archives and through the search

The b18c5 motor has high compression and you will not to be able to boost very much on that high compression. I would suggest getting a b18c/c1 and use the extra money to build the internals on that motor. The b18c1 has a better comp. ratio than the c5 and therefore would be better off for boost straight out of the box.

you might want to use a lower compression motor like the prelude B20..........turbo + high comp=fire+smoke........good luck fitting that engine in the engine bay though

The b20 out of the prelude is different than all the other b series motors. The b18c5 will fit in the engine bay with a mount kit. It has been done plenty of times.

My $0.02

Don't turbo the c5. If you want NA then i would go c5. Otherwise, you are gonna wanna lower compression a bit and you'll probably do some internal work anyway. So if you are intent on getting a B18 then just get the c1. Also, if you want a mean turbo set-up then go CRVTEC. Difficult and tricky but if you do it rite there is a ton of potential. If you dont know what you are doing you will have all kinds of problems.

The other option would be to just turbo a B16a, or B18a/b.

The way I see it is how much money do you have to spend. What something easily accomplished get a B18a LS complete swap. Drop it in and then turrbo it. Already has low compression, you can boost most likely up to 15psi stock. I have boosted 17psi on stock b18b engine, but I had my tuned.

I am currently buidling a 2.0 LS/VTEC T60-1 T4 Turbo which should be in the crx next month as of november.

My block is
Golden Eagle Sleeves 83mm
Golden Eagle Deck Plate 3/4in
Arias 83mm Pistons
Crower Rods Custom
Stock LS Crank
GSR Head (Race Head)
Ferrea Valves
Ferrea Springs
Ferrea Retainers
JG Edelbrock Intake Manifold
96lb MSD Injectors
STR Fuel Rail
SFP Custom T4 Turbo Manifold
Garrett t4 60-1 Turbo
Hasport Race Bushing Billet Mounts
Hasport Shift Linkage

I am waiting on my block to come back from Golden Eagle

Wondering if I should go with Zdyne or DFI?

Best of luck

Hey, civicdrgrcr remember me? I paid you $250 plus shipping for RC 310cc injectors and B&M fuel pressure regulator. Many weeks have gone by and I have yet to receive them. What's going on? I have written you many e-mail and I have heard nothing form you. what's the deal?

i think that putting a turbo on a C5 is a disgrace. that is a honda road race motor from the factory. turbo a C1, they are more readily available, and have a better cylinder head design for turbocharging. (not superior for naturally aspirated.)

Thanks for all the replies, I guess it will be a b18c1. So it will be better for turbo stock but if i wanted to go higher than 15psi like around 20, all i would have to do is upgrade the internals right? I also just briefly looked around for some turbos for the GSR engine, which company is the best quality? (keep in mind drag racing, and money doesnt really matter, ill get it one way or another)

if you want to run 20 pounds of boost then you are ready to drop some cash. you are going to need rods, 9 to 1 pistons, balanced crank, (as well as the rods and pistons, as you shouldn't trust the manufacturer when they say the components are factory balanced.) having the top of the cylinder walls O-ringed would be nice, but your most important factor is tuning. if i did a turbo honda, i would either run a hondata or AEM standalone, as they can provide the best possible tuning. the AFC works, but is not the optimum way to do it. as for the turbo unit itself, i think a T3-60-1 ball bearing would be nice, or bigger if you think bigger is better. but if you think bigger is better, then why not sleeve the GSR block out to 85 mm and stroke it to 2.2 liters? i mean, what the hell? it's only money?

the c5 is hydralic clutch, so you would need to convert.
wiring is hard
basically its a headache. i was about to start the same swap, but i was urged away from it. they turned me to turbo b16a

Boost the D16 till it blows up, then get the GSR. You can adapt the kit to the GSR later and you'll have some cool stories that start off with "Yea, when I fragged my first motor..." You'll be hard core.
