Default bit more than i could chew

i need some guidance from any D-series engine whiz (specifically the d16a6). i know all you car gurus don't think this is interesting and see a bunch of noobs (like me haha) asking a bunch of dumb questions, but please don't just pass me by, I'm and actual lover of cars and id like to know my stuff. my car has been sitting for a while cause it overheated and i just left it because I don't have much knowledge on taking and dismantling an engine and putting it back together. but after a long time of sitting i decided to go off the deep end. i took it out and tore it down. Yesterday i took the pistons out and...i have no knowledge on Honda engines (remember I'm a meat head on all this) but where the piston caps and rods connect each piston has a number, which i assume should be 1,2,3,4 but they aren't..i have a (what appears to be one but idk) 1,1,2,4...should it be numbered in that way?? and how do i take the crankshaft out? i have to clue whatsoever

you didn't have to tear the whole thing down just for a head gasket change.

sorry. i didn't explain that part. the guy i got the car from had the head off when i bought it off of him. i put a head gasket on it and it didn't last a long time. so this time around i'm trying to tear it down and take it to the machine shop just to get a thorough check of the block and all

ah.. well did you at least mark which rods came out from where?

and to get the crank out, make sure you have all the caps, and girdles off.

you'll be fine. it just be better to put reused rods and pistons back in the same hole.

the more important part is the caps. did you mark those? those need to be market for sure.

The number on the rods is the bearing size. The crank will also be marked, as will the block. Look it up for the exact locations of the markings and what they mean. They will be numbers and letters. 1-4 and A-D.

so the piston rod and cap that have a number 2 means that the bearing is 2 millimeters? im kinda confused..and as far as the block..yeah i think ive seen some kind of numbers on the inside..ill check tomorrow. do you know how to take the crank out of a d-series engine?

so at the bottom at the block where the pistons rods connect with the crank it has "pm6" and "1-0". could anyone give me any insight on that?

No. When the rods/crank/block mains are machined at the factory, they are precision measured. They mark the measurements on each item to make bearing replacement easier. They use numbers 1-4 and letters A-D to mark the measurements. Check the maintenance manual to tell you which markings mean what exactly.

Google "honda bearing chart" to read and learn more

I'm a pansy about all of this lol but a pansy that is willing to learn. on the bearing topic...the colors indicate the bearing thickness but my bearings are just plain silver...they have, probably less than 10,000 miles on em..would you recommend replacing them? i guess what my true question is..is there a way to know which piston goes in which cylinder if i didn't pay attention when i took them out? thanks man

I got an electronic manual from a forum site and the supplement is on the b16 that came in the jdm model so it does me no good. I've tried looking on wiki and on other d series engine sites and i can't find what the markings mean

ANY honda car manual with an engine section will cover what you are looking for.

Here are a bunch of great manuals: http://hondatech.info/downloads/Auto/Manuals/Civic/

Consider all the engines that people tear down and replace with aftermarket rods and pistons.
You only need to measure to figure out what bearings you need.
You also need to ensure that your ring gap is correct.
