Default my fuel level changes too much

my fuel level changes too much i think. i like to keep it at half tank of gas. sometimes though with sways and movements of the car it will go down to quarter of a tank or less and raise again slowly. sometimes it never gets a chance to fully raise due to continuous movements. its messing with my head. making me second guess my mpg. my car passed smog but failed evap. does that have anything to due with my post?

try use in your speedometer indicator to find out miles you've driven since you pumped full tank and let your car sit a little to determining if its actually low fuel or high. and if its low and you drove 30miles since you pumped obviously you had 30mpg (idea let your car ease down from rocking gas in the tank together a good reading)

Sounds like you need to replace your fuel level sending unit in the tank. Until you can get it fixed go off mileage not the gauge. Go fill it up and grab a 2.5 gallon gas can and fill it up too. Reset your tripometer and drive it until it runs out of gas. Note the mileage, for ***** and giggles lets say 340 miles. Put the 2.5 gallons in and drive it to the gas station. From that point reset your tripometer every fill up. Give yourself 40 miles or so from where you ran out. So don't take it over 300 miles in this example.

fuel slosh is perfectly normal, unless this is way out of control... but movement of 1/4 tank or less is perfectly normal esp during hard cornering or long sweeping turns. My 98 has done that since the 1st day i picked it up from the dealership.

i noticed somthing today when i let my dad drive my car. i hypermile when i drive so pretty much drive like a grandma. just so you know and like i said the fuel level changes a lot *i think. today though i noticed that the fuel level didnt seem to change at all. very little if any when my dad was driving. he was driving normal by anyones standards. shifting at 3 to 3 1/2 k and not even getting into 5th gear on the streets. any ideas why that happend like that. my theory is his higher shift points kept the gas tank pressurized more. somehow helping the fuel level remain somehow consistant or stable.

i have another question. i put in 5$ of gas when the tank was last just on E. i got to about 50 miles and it was still not back to E dont forget i hypermile. my question is though about how many gallons of gas is still in the tank when the needle is on E.

\my 89 sedan does that. i get about 150 miles on $20/$3.69g in the city and around 165 combined. i can drive about 15 miles after it hits E. but ive never killed it. i thought it was my gauge and when i swapped for an lx cluster it got a little better but will drop around long corners or when i step on it then it floats back up. i dont drive like a grandma per say, but i have an automatic as well.
