97 honda crv shuts of while driving . broke need help!
my aunt just gave me a 97 honda crv . the car cuts off while driving no sputtering nothing just dies . lights radio everything stays on but the motor . honda dealership said it was the igniton coil so i bought a new one and installed it . still having the same problem . can yall help me out lol
yea i put the ignition coil in then drove it around for about 10 mins . it cut off . i coasted to the side of the road i put it in neutral and after a couple mins it started rite back up . is there any way i can test the main relay myself ? im kinda broke and cant afford much lol
I honestly would test the ignitor (ICM). Usually when the coil goes out the car never starts again however when the ignitor gets hot it shuts down and will restart later when it cools off. Test it here:
Get a hair dryer and direct the heat onto the main relay for about 30 seconds. Try to start the car. If the engine just cranks and cranks, main relay is probably bad. If the hair dryer has the option to just blow cool air, you can use that to cool the relay back down and verify the engine starts up right away.
Your problem also may be a bad ignition switch (mounted behind the ignition key cylinder). It can cause the engine to shut off but the dash lights will all turn on.

I agree, [kind of] with HondaPartsHero, because you have replaced the coil already, I would look at the ICM.
The "kind of" part is both the coil and ICM are susceptible to heat failure and either one can fail and work again once cooled down or up and fail once an never work again.
Because the PGM-FI Main Relay also supplies power to the fuel injectors and IGP1&2, [fuel injector relay] if it shuts down, the engine will stall instantly, [no fuel and no spark].
There is no good way to test an intermitent problem with the PGM-FI Main Relay so the best thing to do is assume it is bad and resolder all the points...
