Icon2 98 Civic LX 4-door exhaust swap

Hello all,

I have a 1998 Honda Civic LX 4-door 5-speed that I have been wanting to change the exhaust out for a while. The factory cat/manifold leaks and now smells in the car. The car has 180,000 miles on it and I do not want to spend a fortune to fix it. I did find this on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/150660179591?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D150660179591%26_rdc%3D1
Here is my question: I know you can swap over to an EX exhaust and you have to relocate the cat using an O2 sensor pigtail but the specific details to do the job I cannot find. On the cheap ebay parts it specifies 2/4 door.....I always thought exhaust from a 2-door would not fit a 4-door and vise versa. I realize this kit only has a test pipe and not a cat which I could buy after. Do you guys think this kit will fit? Any better suggestions for me? I need to get this job done soon, I have my daughter in the car and even though I put the air on recirculate I do not want to chance her breathing in the exhaust. I appreciate all of your help.

Thanks,

It will fit, you will need an O2 extension wire (cheap), you will need a new high flow cat (not so cheap), and you will need a new muffler (can be cheap).

I have been lucky in the past finding and using Magnaflow cats that are not to pricey and I would think being high flow is not so important in this case. Performance is not a huge issue on this car. Is there a reason you mentioned using a high flow cat specifically? Although I do hate the 4" muffler tip what would be the reason I would have to change the muffler?

You'll need a "high flow" cat because it's a lot easier to find a 2 1/4" high flow cat and have it welded in than it will be to find a "standard" cat that bolts in. You'll want a new muffler because the "N1 style" that comes with that exhaust will make your car sound like a rabid pack of bees trying to kill a water buffalo. I have basically the same exhaust (2.5" instead of 2.25"), with a welded in 2.5" cat, and a Thrush Turbo muffler ($30 at your local Autozone), and it sounds great, even to my 60+ year old, grew up driving BMW's mother.

I really think I will take the advise on the muffler. I am pretty sure I had a standard magnaflow cat welded and not bolted in the past. Is there a particular high flow cat you recommend? My last experience with a high flow cat allowed me to pass emissions once before I had to replace it with the standard cat. It no longer did what it was supposed to too allow me to pass.

I have a Magnaflow under my car. Granted, I don't have to go through emissions testing, so YMMV. If you can get a standard cat, go for it. There's no real benefit to a high flow cat other than calling it "high flow".

I appreciate all the help. I am trying to get all the parts I need together. I will need O2 extensions. They are available in 16" and 32" lengths....Any idea which one or two that I need to relocate the the O2 sensors?

I would go for the 32". Even if you don't need the full length, you can fold up the excess and zip tie it somewhere secure.

Thank you for your help..How many o2 extensions do I need? 1 or 2? Is one of the stock wires long enough? That Thrush Turbo exhaust you bought....Did you buy it for a civic EX? or another Model? Thanks again!

Just one.

It's a muffler, not an exhaust. It isn't chassis specific. Just a generic muffler with an inlet size to match the piping you buy. Your local muffler shop will weld it on for you.
