Trying to be cheap but still pass emissions. need an exhaust
I looked at alot of ebay exhaust systems, header to tip, and they appear to be fitted with hollow cats rather than real ones.
does anyone know of an ebay kit that doesn't require fabrication, and will pass emissions?
OTHERWISE, i'm going to custom fabricate an exhaust with a couple of friends who each have welders.
IF i do this, i will still be using an ebay header, but with a high performance catalytic converter and a cheapy parts store muffler. probably 2.5 inch with between 200 and 400 cell count in the cat.
My problem with this shiz is trying to decide between 200 and 400 cells? Does anyone have experience passing emissions with a 200 cell cat? Or even 100 cells?
Please, no speculations. this isn't theoretical. Its for my 1993 honda civic EX coupe.

Re: Trying to be cheap but still pass emissions. need an exhaust
wouldn't i have to go on a goose chase for a real cat that'l fit where the hollow cat was in the ebay-tier exhaust system? At that point it would need to be fabricated, and i feel like 4->1 header, flex pipe, high flow cat, straight pipe to muffler under passenger floor panel and side pipe would be easier at that point..
And does anyone know about passing emissions with 200 cell cat vs 400 cell cat? 400 is apparently magnaflow's standard replacement style, and thats already a performance part. is 200 cell actually better? will it still pass emissions though?

if your looking for cheap and you know a halfway decent welder---
thats your answer.
If your looking for quickest and dont mind paying a bit, go the ebay route

Do you know anything about catalytic converter cell count? Magnaflow says theirs are 400 and research is telling me i can get them as low as 100, while OEMs range around 700. But i'm unsure if i'll be able to pass emissions with so many less honeycombs and if its even a worthwhile flow/power gain from going so low

Well, there's two things that matter with a cat's efficiency. The cell count, and the precious metal "wash" that was used when making the cat. A 100 cell cat with a high-gram mixture will do better than a 400 cell cat with a low-gram mixture. When you buy a quality "weld in" cat, the biggest difference in the price is the quality of the wash.
Metal core is better than ceramic core, because metal core doesn't disintegrate. As long as you get a quality cat, you should be alright.

i just passed inspection in nj with a 00 bmw 323i with no muffler and an after market cat. i got on ebay for $89 shipped. just get an aftermarket one and 30min before you go to inspection hit up a local highway and dog it for a bit to heat that cat up. just make sure you have no cel's
