Replacing Main Bearings?

The owner of the machine shop that has done some work for me said that you can replace the main bearings without removing the crank by rotating the old ones out and rotating the new ones in. Anyone ever done this? I'm using ACL bearings so the bearing color is moot.
A friend of mine did it in an Avenger. They rebuilt the whole motor, put it back in, then had to replace the main bearings again. Needless to say, we didn't want to pull the motor again. So they got under the car and replaced them.
yes, it can be done. just be extremely careful not to nick the crank when removing them. make sure to remove all the belts as this will let the tension off of the bearings and will cause them to rotate easier.
