Default tranny blown

Sooo my tranny is shot. Just trying to figure out what happened, if anyone can tell me that would be awesome! I bought my hatch a from an old lady with 95,000 miles and.drove it about a thousand when I noticed a grinding noise.. I was told it was the input shaft bearingand to ride it out until it went out. This is what happened a few days ago.

A picture that isn't one gigantic blur would be sorta helpful here.

Without actually having it apart it looks like the far end mainshaft bearing went bad (doesn't happen nearly as often, but it does happen) and flew apart and something bound up and broke the case. You'll know more when you take it apart. Case is obviously junk, mainshaft probably is too, along with 1st and 2nd since the mainshaft side is case into the mainshaft. You might be able to save 3rd, 4th, and 5th along with the final drive and diff. Actually come to think of it, 5th is probably burnt, maybe 4th as well. Pull it apart and see what's left and start hunting for another tranny.

Ok thanks for the info, I will pull it apart when I can get it to my house. I was in 3rd when it exploded.. I found an s40 tranny near me. Would that fit my d16y8?

Yes, but there are different S40 transmissions. Check the stamp next to the fill plug. A000 is the small bearing CX/DX/LX transmission. B000 is the big bearing transmission and can be either an HX (long geared) or EX (short geared)

Low on tranny fluid man . When your tranny gets low fith normally starts grinding first but then the bearing on the end will sieze and cause this. It was probably never checked. If its a bearing failer its noramlly low on oil. I have a single tranny from a customer that said it was just grinding in fifth then stopped pulling . Got the tranny as core pulled the casing off. Every tooth on every gear was gone . Eery bearing in it seized up. No oil.
