Default Rod knock...

So I've been hearing a tapping starting at 2500 for a while. I thought it was carbon build up, and my timing, but tonight as I got off the freeway, I could hear it intermittent, and at idle, and louder.

1988 CRX si D16a6.

So I did some research and it seems to be on the #2 cylinder. I pulled the wires, and it dies with #2 pulled.

I kinda have two questions:

I was thinking about rebuilding it. It's my daily driver, so stock is just fine. But having only built V8s I was wondering if the crank can be saved. Yes, I know we won't know for sure until the crank is pulled and checked, but for instance, a V8 has large journals and most of the time it can be saved. But is it it the same for the D16?

Second: Where in so cal (closer to Azusa the better) can I get a reliable used or rebuilt engine? Thank you for telling me about craigslist, I've already looked. But does anyone know of any companies that sell engines? I can remember a long time ago seeing all of these ads in the Recycler, and Autotrader magazines for Japanese engines for $127.oo everywhere. Yes, I know that times have changed, but are there any of these places still around? I have a shop that it can be shipped to so I can avoid the shipping costs. Also, can I use any D16 as long as it isn't a Vtec? I'd rather not change the computer and harness and VSS and speedo and all of that. I'd like to pull the old one out, swap accessories, and put the new one back in.

Thanks in advance.

Default Re: Rod knock...

no way to know if it can be saved until its out, you can drop in any D series motor, don't change the vss if you use your tranny... there are pretty cheap kits online that make the vtec conversion and obd1 conversion pretty much plug in,

obd1 motors typically perform better and are favored vtec or non-vtec. as far as getting a motor I have no clue around you but ebay honestly has good motors if you buy from an importer and not a average joe selling from home.

if all you have is a rod knock you can get just a new bottom end or just a crank and corresponding rod that was knocking, your head will bolt to any d15-d16 block but if you go with a newer z6 or y8 block you might as well pich in for the full vtec swap.

ive had many D15 blocks with D16 non-vtec heads outrun stock non-vtecs with ease, think it bumps the compression a little bit.
