Rod knock in a 98 EX...or is it? (bum bum bum!)
Last week my mom had to tow me home cuz my car started banging like crazy. After taking off the crank pulley, checking the water pump, and readjusting timing we think its rod knock. I put it all back together and just hooked up the alternator and took around the block. I know rod knock is bad, but what does it feel like when its driving? I'm curious if something broke off in the tranny. The car idles perfectly so i have to question something internal.

Swing it by a shop man, any tech worth thier salt can tell you in under 30 seconds if it's a rod knock. That is a really hard thing to nail down over the internet unless you can post up a sound clip. It wouldn't necessarily do it at idle anyway.
On a side note I think that the fact that your mom works on your car with you is the ****.

rod knock will usually lead to a blown engine very quickly...
it will sound reallllllyyyy bad...(like shaking rocks in a tin can)... you will notice a loss of power...
when a rod knock is first developing, it usually only makes a sound in the mid rpm ranges... when mine happened it was between 2000 and 4000 rpm... but no sound at idle or higher than that... but a day later it got really worse and it just gets worse and worse from there until you got three holes in your block :D
i wouldnt drive it anymore, have a tech come out to look at it or have it towed to a shop...
this is just my opinion but it may cost a lot at a shop to get it fixed... it would be cheaper to swap you engine (not necessarily for a better one, just cheaper than rebuilding it)...
if you look hard enough you can pick up a dohc zc for $250 and if you got the knowledge, swap it yourself... if not, find someone to help you out for cheap... that motor will have just about the same power as a stock d16y8...
this is just all me guessing by the sound of it...
"banging" isnt really a good description of whats going on
but either way, you'll probably get a more accurate ansewr at a shop
