Cold start the car and take off the radiator cap.while its running pour your antifreeze in and let it sift until its full, then close it back up..

I'll try and see if i under stand you correctly first.

ok so you start the car cold and let it idel till it warm to about 1/4 temp guage or as you put it "it goes up a pinky" ( i assume the width of your pinky finger fron the C) then when you take off and get up to speed it drops back to to the C.

if the above is correct then i would look into a NEW thermostat as yours is stuck open or is missing.

if you mean to say the is reaches normal running temp of 1/2 temp guage and when you stop it goes up a pinkys width then drop back down when you get up to speed.

i would say you are low on coolant and need to top off the system. if you are low on coolant the question is WHY??
i would look for leaks and check the oil if the oil looks like a chaco milkshake it's time for a headgasket.

Thanks every one and B20forlife the second one you mention is the correct one it reaches half way and once the car is stop the temp starts rising not much tho once I put it into gear and head of the temp starts cooling down to below half. thanks for the help really appreciate it. any clue how much the head gasket replacement would go for if it is that?

i dont think theres a way but if you check your oil and coolant and it doesn't look like chocolate milk then its fine. most likely your issue is a thermostat problem or you need to top it off

Cooling system pressure is a cheap test for HG leak.

Compleatly cold first start up of the day.
Pop the hood and make sure the radiatior is full of fluid and replace the cap.
Now squeeze the upper rad hose and it should be fairly ez to squeeze.
now start the car and as soon as it starts get out and squeeze the hose again.
if it's firm and hard to squeeze but still cold your HG is Blowen.
