Default the turbo drama continues aka wtf caused this

So I was working on my jwt sport 600 (journal bearing gt2860) and needed to remove the turbine housing....

Well at the start of this little endeavor the compressor housing just fell off, causing this...

The ****? Good thing I have 2 more of these compressor wheels laying around and a second jwt 600, which needs to be rebuilt as well...

So, go to remove the turbine housing bolts using the typical pb blaster/heat method... one comes out clean, this happened three times...

So now I have three broken off bolts in the turbine housing.... but I got it off

Now I proceed to pull the turbo apart, it had no abnormal shaft play, leaks, spun fine.. so I pull the compressor wheel off and find this..

How the hell did the retainer get cracked? So I pull that off...

Even more good news :-\ the thrust bearing collar/retainer was so cracked I was able to take the rest of the internals out without removing the collar.... I have never seen this before, ever...

I wanted to put a t04b backplate on both of them anyways to run the larger housing but now I think I'm glad the compressor wheel got bent, it would've sucked to get this thing on my car then have some catastrophic failure... luckily rebuild kits are cheap, I'll be using a 360* thrust bearing next. Funny thing is the turbine shaft is perfect, no heat marks, no scoring, etc... it looks brand new and is straight.

I'm so pissed that after this happened I drank a beer (8am lol, don't judge me)

Maybe I can engineer a gt2871 compressor wheel onto this setup

Hopefully Mac (TheShodan) can chime in...

I've taken apart a lot of turbos... ones with bent/snapped shafts, chewed up wheels, the whole 9 but none of them had any damage like this.... and this turbo was functional on my built vg30dett I picked up

Jim wolf technology, this is an upgrade for z32 300zx's, all Garrett components, they happened to come on a motor I had laying around. They basically take a Garrett chra and ,machine OEM Garrett housings off of Nissans to fit, given how tight the engine bay is on a z32.

It's basically a journal bearing gt2860r, however since I need a new wheel anyways I figured maybe a 2860rs or 2871 wheel... I can get the housing for the 2871 cheap, just need to have the backplate machined from 60mm to 71mm which I can do on a lathe... I would need to have my 2860 housing machined and reprofiled to fit the rs wheel, which might cost as much as a new housing

I've seen a few of these on the Mitsu 14bs, and a few GT25R and GT28Rs. Bottom line, it was the extremely high thrust loads that were used on this unit. This thing has been BEATEN, (the way it should be ) more than likely over 35%-40% over its actual capacity for extended periods of time. With that said, however, it is VERY rare to see a JWT GT28 series get destroyed from that kind of thrust abuse. (I can see the wear on the collar outside of the fracture areas). JWTs have made very efficient twin upgrades for the Z32, and they keep their turbo upgrades rather small. The unfortunate problem with JWTs is their cost.. They were a little outside anything most H-Ters would pay for a good upgrade. But they would turn a Fairlady Z into anything but "Fair", I'll tell you that.

Second. It looks like this has been dropped inadvertently from a high area. I think that was the direct cause of the fracture on the retainer, but the thrust issue was going to happen anyway. Is there any idea how much torque was on the thrust collar bolts? That would help too.

Actually glad you found out THIS way and not while on the car. That's about as much as I can surmise for now. Get me on AIM, we can discuss it later, as well.

I've never dropped it, and it was on the motor sitting on my motor bench until we moved, then it was wrapped and padded and put in a big container will all 20 something of the other turbos, largest on bottom, and then carefully moved.

It's confusing, I got the ,motor freshly pulled, put it on a pallet, strapped it down then brought it home. Now I'm wondering what the other twin looks like.

I'll aim you later because now I'm thinking bigger :D

I didn't say you dropped it.. I say it looks like it had been dropped, or received some other impact , perhaps from an air compressed tool or something. Pallets are especially treated with abuse. but I'd definitely check the others before putting one of these bad boys on.

Well I'm going to get the other turbo out of storage today and check it... but I'm debating about putting a Gt2860RS wheel in them both, just wondering if that extra .7mm bigger inducer is worth it vs. Say a billet 2860r wheel.
