Default Damn!turbo locked up...

last night i went on a good hour or so drive, making 18psi of boost pretty nicely...came back home and noticed a shitty smell..i was really busy so i ignored it and decided i would check it out in the morning..
i went out to inspect my motor this morning..
i went to feel how my turbo was doing and tried to wiggle the shaft, and the ****** was completely locked up!it would not spin or wiggle or anything!
its pretty depressing..thanks new years!

anyways..im trying to get the p.o.s. apart, and was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to get the circlip off..i tried hammering it with a screw driver to get it to rotate off,but its not budging.

its a 14b

thanks for any help!

Easy guy, going off for no reason. 14B is a Mitsubishi turbo from a first generation Eclipse/Talon/Laser. Insane turbos for single cams.

OP I'm not too sure why that happened, never heard of a 14B taking a **** like that for no GOOD reason.

id think that would be a small turbo for a b18, assuming its in your ls from the profile picture. if anything it might have melted on itself, im not sure, i would see what someone else says about it.

oh i meant no pun when i said that..it was for laughs bro..i thought you might take offense, thats why i deleted it..

anyways..for some reason,a ring popped out of place inside the turbo..no idea why(probably a shitty rebuild from the previous owner..)

i took it all apart, everything looked fine.i put it back together correctly and now it is spinning better than it was before!

and yes this is on my da.i got HELLA boost with it,bout broke my neck LOL.i think im happier with this turbo than i was when i was rockin a t3 on a b16..
it definitely spools a great deal sooner...

i got it all back together last night..worked on it until 4am out in the cold and finally got it all back together.went for a run real quick and it was boosting again and was beautiful.
this morning i wanted to go for a run around the block to feel some boost, and it was still boosting great!got back home and check the shaft and it was locked up again!i cant spin it!

what would cause the little ring in the turbo to keep popping out???

c-clip inside the cartridge is worn. when its cold it fits fine, once heated up it will expand out of place. It was replaced with a mitsu rebuild kit. they 've been known to do that for the ones I had repaired.

YOur best best is to get a used 16G and don't pay to repair it any longer. Check on DSMtuners.com for a guy named JusMX141 on the turbo tech forum. He's the Mitsu turbo guru on that forum and will help you get the better replacements. I stopped repairing 14Bs years ago, since they could get so bad it wasn't worth the time. Justin's a good guy and knows his ****.

Any turbocharger that uses a DSM radius flange and its unique o2 housing setup. That includes 16G (big and "small" 16G) 20G, or anything that Forced Performance makes specifically for the DSM, and not Evolution. The materials in the PTE turbine housing for their dsm turbos are not very robust so I don't recommend those. Bullseyepower has Turbine housings that fit T3/T04E Garrett and turbonetics turbochargers that you can use to fit them

But you CANNOT use a 16G6 or anything from the Evolution. Those are an entirely different flanging system.

*EDIT* - I also need to clarify that it was an ebay rebuild kit that was used and not an OEM Mitsubishi rebuild kit that causes that issue. I needed to make that clear.

If you get another turbo, I suggest staying away from a lot of the 14b turbos that you're seeing for so cheap. There's a reason why they were getting rid of them so fast; because it wasn't worth putting in the real effort that you're trying to do. DSM guys beat those REALLY HARD TO DEATH. You'll just wind up with more junk to try and rebuild.
