Might do a b series swap
Hey guys I made a thread on d-series . org but they told me to post here instead. Here is a copy+paste of the first post:
I have a 99 civic and i had planned to do an auto to manual swap this summer on my y8 motor but i think it might have its pistin rings leaking a bit of oil and it has a ton of black(presumably oil) underneath the dis on top of the trannt and on the motir and i feel like the motor may be dying so i was thinking of saving up for a whole motor swap instead. Question is, is the b20b motor have the same motor mount points as the b16? I know my 99 civic is compatible with the b16a2 with just new motor mounts.
Also what would be the price on a si tranny vs a ls tranny?
Would the swap be almost identical as the b16 swap? Without vtec? What kind of ecu can i use with it? I just want something that can help me pass traffic on the freeway and the b20 is cheap enough for me over a dseries motor
Here is another post answering with more info/questions
I plan on doing the auto to manual swap as well. Just trying to see if an si/gsr tranny is worth it. Im a srudent that drives 80 miles a day so gas mileage has to be good but i also wanna have a bit of fun you know? Which trammy has the longer gear ratios? Gsr or si? I knos the ls tranny has the longest ratios but i also am aware of the si's ratio on 5th gear being infamous at being really short(3k rpm @ 55mph!)
And im guessing that if i change the tranny wires to the d series auto it should hook right up to the b series? And i didnt know i would have been able to use the ls ecu? Wouldnt the displacement size of each maje it incapatible? And i didnt know of any manual b20 ecus. Im gonna go with the b20 engine from a jdm crv btw. I know its not a legal swap in cali but fk it im keeping it stock anyways ill just have to pay a bit more for my smogs to "pass"
Sorry this is a long read, your reward is a cookie!
Thank you wonderful people!

Just in case you are unaware, a b20 will never be legal in your car in CA. Any other swap will have to be REF'd also.
Yes I am aware of that but b16/18's are too expensive and the d16y8 just isn't cutting it for me. B20b is perfect for me as a DD (has great power/tq for it to be usable on the highway & I don't plan on modding it at all not even an intake or headers) so I know i'm never gonna get pulled over and if I need to smog again I can just pay the guy off for the visual inspection part. I'm also going to move out of cali in a couple of years when the gf graduates school so I wont have it in for long while im in this hell hole of a state lol
Now just because it is illegal it does not stop people from doing it.
I have seen it, and question it, but some how people are getting the B20 to be BAR'd in CA...I have seen a couple stickers saying that the engine is a B18B1 but in the notes section it says B20 in place of b18 (yeah, I question this too, but if this is legal, then HEY!)
To the OP:
You say your car has a Y8, so why not stick with vtec. Also, where in Cali do you live? If you live in the northern central valley (sac area) or bay area, Attarco engine importers are a great way to go.
You could probably pick up a replacement y8 from them for under $600-700, and, if they have one, a B18C (or the equivalent USDM version) for around $800 or so. But yes, the B20 is a cheaper B-series engine (attarco has them shipped locally out the door for <$600 with core and tax).
If you are commuting, the LS or GSR trannies will be a better choice over the B16 tranny. The LS has the tallest Final drive of the bunch so it should give you the best MPG. The GSR
is in the middle for a combo of MPG and acceleration, and the B16 Tranny is the shortest.
You can keep AC with all of these swaps, you just need the CRV or Del Sol AC bracket
There is some discrepancy with the mounts, depending on if you have a 2 bolt or 3 bolt driver side engine bracket. But typically you can reuse your old mounts or a combination of civic si, del sol vtec, and integra mounts.
You will need a new mount for the tranny. And you will only need to plug in the VSS and reverse switch to the tranny...all other plugs are ignored from the auto harness.
Then you need to worry about the ECU. If you want smog legal, it has to be OBD2 for you, along with the engine.
And don't forget shift linkages!
All in all...you are looking around $2700 for the b-series swap, doing it yourself and about five days, on your own, to do it if you have not done it before ( that is with taking your time and not working 24/7 to finish it.
Have fun! hahaha

I have seen this phenomenon too of the B20 being bar'd but the truth is the two I know of eventually had to replace those b20's
CHP knows those engines come from a light truck and there fore they impound the cars.
Its sent back to the smog ref and bingo it fails.
The storys of them now being accepted is true with caveats.
You dont want to have the headache of having to go back to the ref, and having him tell you its not legal and then off you go to traffic court to pay your fine.
Then you'll have to replace the engine anyway.
Or if you are really slick and have the money as soon as you get pulled over to change the engine out again then get it rebar'd before you have to go to court.
Only then can you avoid the fine.
However you only have a two month period to do that or the ticket you get will become a fine anyway.
It will be a hassle for you...
FYI California now has rolling smog checks...thats right on the side of the road.
Poilce or CHP flag you down and your car goes straight on a dyno to be tested.
