Default H23A1 Crankshaft Keyway issue

So do to my busy schedule with work I hired a "mechanic" to re thread the h23a1 crankshaft pulley bolt hole. While doing so he didn't put in the new key and now the new key will not go in all the way, what's the easiest way to realign the keyway? I was pissed when I came home to that issue! Changing the pulley turned out to be a big headache for me, should have waited till Sunday to do it myself....

You need to make sure all of the pulleys on that shaft are aligned right, then put the key in. I usually just install it all and torque the crank bolt down, it will pull it in all the way as long as everything is lined up right.

What would be the easiest way to do that? and will this result in bad timing? just trying to figure out the easiest way to resolve this issue.

Really depends what exaclty was done. I would re-do the timing belt making sure it is all in time properly, and then reset distributor timing as well.

Make sure the tapered end of the woodruff key is installed properly.

My big question is why were you replacing the key and why did it matter that he reused the old one?

It would seem that the mechanic did not install a key at all if I read that correctly

The bolt came loose while i was driving and tore up the kay way on the crank pulley and the key itself, took everything off and found out the bolt thread and bolt hole thread was torn up as well, bought everything bolt, pulley, and key. Had the guy rethread the bolt hole on the crankshaft and he didnt put the new key in BEFORE he rethreaded it and now the key way is not aligned, key only goes in 2/3rds of the way in and sticks out the rest of the 1/3, so I was wondering how can we re-align the key way to re-insert the new key. And if timing has been affected by his actions?. The tranny was also in neutral when he was doing all this......

you need to take all the pulleys off and make sure nothing else is damaged. make sure the galley the key sits in is not damaged as well. it simply needs to come apart so you can look at it.

Sounds like he may have turned the crank slightly while working, yet the timing belt and gear stayed in place.

As 98VTEC said, just need to take it all apart, inspect, and re-align it all. Might be a good time for a new water pump and timing belt as well!
