im lookin at the gt35 or the s256. t3 types

i dont have a really high hp goal. im more interested in having response and good drivability.

this is going on an h22 that is stock (i know, i know) but i have another h22 on the side that im building up.

if there any other good ball bearing turbos that i should consider, please let me know

are you talking about brands or turbo size?

if your talking about size, you must select the turbo for what you want to accomplish.

brands
garrett, turbonetics, precision, holset, IHI, borg warner are some great brands to choose from

hp goal, dont have one set in stone. max would probably be at 400. all im looking for now is somewhere around 300.

i dont do drag racing. auto x and road racing

i realize the s256 isnt a ball bearing. but i'd rather have a ball bearing for longevity and that slightly quicker spool

the reason im asking is cause i havent kept up with turbo stuff since i've had my NA set up for 11 years now.

but the gt30 is definitely looking good to me right now.

does the gt30 have a water cooled type too?

reliability is my number 1 concern. i dont like replacing stuff over and over.

GT30XR series turbos are all ball-bearing turbochargers. Many garretts have water cooling options other than the GT-R or GT-X-R series turbochargers

You need to base this on goals and characteristics and not just "slightly quicker spool".. At low boost pressures, you will not see the "quicker spool" as the by-product benefit you're looking for.

Reliability is all in care of the turbocharger, not just type or brand. (Regular oil changes, the correct oil, cool down cycles, water cooling, etc.)

There are over 20 models that can fit this category. Better narrow it down to maximum willingness to pay (budget) for a turbo. etc.

 

what i meant by reliability is that i want something that will last. i remember seeing precisions go and a bajillion ebay type turbos and all their wonderous problems

goals and characteristics? my goal is a 300hp. i'd like to have the turbo that would be capable to put me to 400 if i ever decide i want to go that high. i road race and do scca. i need response from the turbo because i dont like the car to feel peaky

price limit? i dont have one.

right now im reading up about the borg warner efr 7064 .83 a/r. what do you guys think about that?

so how about this for a question. whats the fastest spooling t3 thats watercooled and oil cooled?

GT2860rs. Crazy fast spool and sufficient for 300whp. I made 353whp on mine.

A GTX2860r will give you the same crazy spool you want with capability to hit 400whp with a good flowing setup.

 

I really like Borg Warner. Reliability is the main reason...they're used in over the road diesel trucks and last half-million miles or more. The EFR series has shown promise, but they're not the easiest turbo to buy at the moment. I would suggest an S256 or S258/9.

I ran an S256 on my built LS/VTEC and it provided good response and had plenty of power left to give. At 16psi, it made 385whp/285wtq on 91 octane...full boost on an SLS Prototype was ~4400rpm. If pushed, the turbo will make upwards of 550whp.

Here is one of the dyno graphs from that tuning session. It made another 8-ish whp beyond this point after dialing in the MBC.

 

As a road racer myself, that keeps you down to smaller than even the 7064 on the EFR side. In Garrett world, going down to the smaller GTX and GT-R Series would help. From the GTX2867R to the GT2860RS, GTX28R, GT2871R for the B18C series.

Sorry to sound blunt, but this is a dumb way to phrase a question. Never ask it like that again.

Time to narrow down your options in the smaller 36lbs/min-48lbs/min range.. Start reading.
