Default D16Y8 cranks but won't start

I have a 1997 Honda civic that had a D16y8. I did not check the oil till it was too late. I had a major rod knock. I bought a D16y7 block. Used the same head Y8 and Y8 tranny. Hooked everything up right i hope. I tried to time it. TDC the farthest piston to the right and made sure that the came gear was up. i added all the oils and fluids that it needed. Now when i go to turn the car on the battery is dead. I bought a new battery and the car turns but does not turn over. What could cause this to happen? Please help.

You battery clips are loose. And your title is misleading. Try jumping the car.

If you can jump it, then you need those chemical that you put on those battery clamps. If you jump it and car still doesn't start, then you have to check for fuel, air and spark. You need all 3 to start.

i took the spark plugs out to see if they were wet and yes they were. Its sucking in air. now I did not check spark. and if it is not grounded properly then it will not spark correct?

If spark plugs are wet, you got oil in your cylinders. Replace the gaskets. Also, wet spark plugs will not spark because electrical devices don't like working in wet places. Did you check the fuel?

try taking out the spark plugs and drying them and install them back in, then try flooring the gas pedal and turning the key all the way ti start the car and holding it for a good 30-40 seconds. you might have flooded the engine. This happened when i replaced my distributor, it would crank but not start. I did this and within 10 seconds the car started up.

It cranks over but doesnt start? You really need to be more descriptive if it is in deed turning over then you can rule out the battery and clamps. You say you pulled your plugs and they are wet? If so do they smell like gas? Try starting with making sure all your connections are good everythings plugged in like distributor for example. Then Id check for spark if you have that and fuel time to check mechanical timing and that the distributor is properly installed.

I took out the plugs again today i dried them out and i checked for spark. Each spark plug sparked. I tightened down the battery clamps still nothing i put the plugs back in and tried to turn it and took them out and it smelled like gas everywhere. The whole engine bay smelled like gas. all the connections are in and i double check the vacuum and coolant lines everything is right. i can here the pistons pumping. I did the timing again today. I messed it up yesterday but i re timed it and put it in first car did a major jerk forward and stopped. The cam gear key snapped. Good thing i had a spare. I put it back in put i have not tighten the timing belt because i feel like im going to strip the bolt on the pulley. i made sure it was a TDC before i closed up for the night.

Press gas pedall all the way down, turn key completely and crank car for about 30 seconds. Engine might be flooded....like i stated earlier

Check all your engine grounds especially the one from the tranny to the fender well.
Leave your dizzy a little loose and turn it a little at a time while cranking.
Sounds like your off a bit still.

That won't help a flooded engine, that'll make it worse. If the engine is flooded, OP needs to remove spark plugs and injectors, and let the car sit in a car port/garage for 12-24 hours.

Wrong. Wet means fuel isn't being ignited, which means no spark, or incorrectly timed spark.

OP, test your fuel pressure, and test for spark. Fuel pressure (as correctly measured at the fuel filter) should read 36-40PSI. Spark should be bright white. Get back to us when you've done these two tests, and we can diagnose from there.

I checked spark again and they all spark i dryed out the engine and tryed to turn it on with with the new timing and still nothing.

I put it in first and the car does roll forward when i try to start it.

I still can figure this out and the grounds are perfect

38 psi of gas pressure

I dont want to give up on this. Maybe its because i tryed to do a mini-me swap?

I have seen it before and it works... i dont know why it is not working for me.

last thing no CEL light on only lines on after i try to turn on the car is Oil and Battery.

Remove your cluster, and make sure the CEL bulb is intact and not blown. When you turn the car to ON (II) before cranking, it should light up.

...because holding the gas at WOT cuts off fuel delivery allowing w/e is left of gas in the engine to get burned/pushed out with each crank untill there is enough mixture to get ignition...and because i did not do this procedure when my engine was flooded?

OP like i stated earlier, clean your spark plugs dry, place them back in and attempt what i told you 13 posts ago. If its flooded this will clear it up.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. While yes, you are (partially) correct, and yes, it does work, it isn't the correct way to dry out a flooded engine. We do solutions around here, not quick fixes.

LOL shut the **** up already, I can attest to it working.

OP, check your firing order.

Yep, let's put unneeded stress on the ignition system to dry out a flooded motor, instead of just letting it dry out on it's own

Yes, I used the wrong wording. Yes, it works. No, it is not the best way to solve the problem.

Is the distributor in fact installed correctly? Correct me if im wrong but can you install them 180 out? Youd still have spark just at the wrong time and it would cuase it to flood out.

And no, you can't install a distributor 180 degrees out. Well you could but it doesn't sit flush and the o-ring doesn't seal.
