In cali, civic failed smog. Hc ppm on idle. Do you guys think cat converter is bad.

^^ Emissions sheet will def help out. You're either getting too much fuel or not enough air. Could also b that you just need to reset ignition timing, but yeah, post a pic of the emissions.

 

its a 94 civic ex. completely stock.. no mods what so ever.. it has around 269k. car runs fine has no problems. just wont pass smog. cap and rotor have roughly 10-15k miles on it. fuel filter and air filter are pretty new couple thousand miles.

What spark plugs? Properly gapped?

 

ngk platinum spark plugs and yes

 

Engine running cold? Taking a longer than normal time to warm up? Is idle speed a little high?

 

Engine runs normal temp. Idle speed is a little low. Usually 400 rpms.

 

The engine should idle at about 700 rpm. Have you tried adjusting the idle speed and replacing the PCV valve?

Any other performance problems?

 

No other performance problems.

 

Fix the low idle issue and also test the coil and igniter unit.

A faulty O2 sensor might also cause the problem.

Is the smog shop far from your house? Sounds like the cat wasn't hot enough when the test was done, especially because the tech raised rpm's to 911 on an idle test lol. He was probably trying to get it to warm up. Unless that's standard for a Cali test?

 

Smog shop i went to was 15 miles away from my house. Car usually dont idle at 900 lol.. dony knw why it did. Do you think the cat is bad?

 

Hmm, the cat would've probably been warm by then. I don't think it's ur cat, cuz ur post-cat O2 would've thrown a code saying so. Did you test your pre-cat O2 as Ron suggested?
