Default Turbo options for my 800hp V8 s13 build

yea yea I know this isn't a nissan forum but this place has by far the most knowledgeable turbo people

I've decided to put a vh45de in my s13 street car. Power goals will vary from about 500hp for rain driving w/ boost by gear and 600hp for plain old street driving/daily to 800hp with a 70/30 meth injection blend for when I'm bored. I know the power levels vary but i'm trying to size the turbos around these goals and i think i've done a good job of that. Fuel is 93 octane, no e85 is nearby so don't bring it up.

Plan for the motor are this

Bottom end
93mm CP pistons, 9:1 CR
Forged rods
Ported and shimmed oil pump

Top end

Mild port on the heads
Franklin Cams 268* .416" lift cams
Franklin Cams dual valvesprings
ARP headstuds
MLS headgaskets
custom sheetmetal intake manifold with 100mm Tb

Drivetrain
custom 7.25" twin/triple plate fidanza aluminum flywheel
Tilton ot-ii triple plate clutch
Tilton hydraulic throwout bearing
G-Force dogbox t-56 tremec transmission
MasterShift sequential shifter
Driveshaft shop custom aluminum driveshaft
Ford cobra 8.8irs rear differential (lsd to be determined)
Driveshaft shop custom 31 spline axles to fit s13 outer hubs

Fuel
ATL fuel cell
1000cc top feed injectors
custom 10-an fuel rails, dual 10-an feed and 8-an return.
Aeromotive a-1000 fuel pump
Aeromotive regulator
Meth Injection
Stock coils/NGK iridium plugs
Some sort of standalone (hard to find something to use the stock nissan CAS)

Also still debating on having the entire motor cryo treated for increased wear resistance and fatigue resistace

Redline will be set at 8000, the setup can take that high of an rpm and I know it will make power. People bump the redline from the stock 6900 to 7400 on an all stock motor and it wants to keep making power even in stock NA form.
Bottom end is very beefy with a forged and shot peened crank with 6 bolt mains with studs from the factory.

These motors are pretty efficient as well. A guy in florida runs one in his s14 with a vortech s trim supercharger and makes 425rwhp at 6psi. Team japspeed in the UK ran a bone stock vh45 with twin gt28r's making around 600rwhp on pump gas and they beat on it for a whole year at drift events without one single issue.

I'm debating as whether or not to go twins or stay single. All my math says either way it will take about 24psi to get 800rwhp no matter how i go. Im looking for the most responsive setup possible given the power levels.

Here's what I've found that fits my needs

Twins - gt3076r. still deciding on a turbine housing... probably undivided t3 .82a/r as running 4 wastegates is just expensive and retarded.

twins at 500hp

twins at 800hp

as you can see its a pretty good match all around and would provide a decent usable powerband

single - gt4508 tial 1.00a/r v-band turbine housing

500hp

800hp

also a good match as well. what I'm not sure about is how laggy a 4508 would be even though I've got a large displacement motor. No idea how an 87mm turbine wheel in a 1.00 turbine housing would respond. Don't really have very much experience with turbos this large, nor can I find any info on them on any v8 forums around... most guys just go with the gt47's which isnt very practical for a low displacement high revving street v8.

I also did some other mapping and a k27 would be perfect, as would the large 8 blade hx35, not sure if i would go this route as finding new or lightly used k27s and hx35s is hard, plus with the myriad of turbine housings on the hx35's I would probably have to buy a pair of housings.

Single turbo would be preferable, as it is cheaper and easier to package and plumb but I could make twins work... Just have to get creative with how to run the downpipe on the passenger side.

its a ways down the road, as I need to get moved and get my civic back on the road so I can waste all my time building this stupid 240 lol... Its already been a 6 year project lol.

I just want to get everything I need down on a list so I can start accumulating parts, turbo selection is a big part of that as it dictates turbo manifold design (i don't want to fabricate things twice) exhaust design, intercooler setup, etc.

I'd go with a GTX4202 or even a GTX4294 and a 1.15 or 1.32AR T4 housing.

Do you know what the head flows? What's the intake valve size and exhaust valve size? Don't worry too much about turbine sizes just yet. There are 1.8l engines turning the 45R 87mm wheels no problem

the 4202 and 4294 dont flow enough... im looking at 100lb/min at 24 psi... the only thing that has a large enough compressor side is a 4508

yea and they make full boost at like 6-7k... im looking more for 4000 for full boost, which with a 4.5l motor isn't out of reach. the head flows a lot, dual over head cam, 4 valves per cylinder... its not a pushrod motor by any means.. 38.15mm intake valves, 33mm exhaust valves. the ports are short and a straight shot to and from the combustion chamber. the only thing we do is clean up the little bit of casting flash, gasket match, and knife edge the port divider

gtx4294... doesn't flow near enough

im building a street car, not a drag car... t6 anything is way too laggy

Ahhh. See, I didn't know displacement before. That sure helps. If you go Garrett you'll want the 45R wheel for sure at a minimum.

You'll prob want a compressor inducer of 80mm. That should give you ample flow for what you're looking to do. The BW S480 is a great and reliable unit that comes with a price tag about half of the Garrett.

the s476 is a perfect compressor from what i mapped on it. i'll see if i can find the 480 map. the only thing that would concern me is the 88mm turbine wheel in a 1.32ar turbine housing... seems to me like that would be incredibly laggy for a street car. some companies make t4 housings for the larger bw turbos but i'm not sure if thats possible for the 480

i just found the official gtx4202 map... it looks like it would be a good match as well for 800hp, and the smaller wheel and turbine section = better response. the only issue is if i dial back power to around 5-600 then im off the lower section of the map until about 5000rpm

I'm still wondering how to package a large single turbo, while cheaper than 2 turbos, wastegates, etc. the manifold and required manifold crossover is a cluster.. might have more room if i tube the front end in front of the shock towers.

does anyone have a compressor map for the 8884? im concerned thats it's too big to get down to 600hp...

Single options
s476
gt4508

Twins
3076
?
?

anyone have anymore ideas on what might be a good twin setup? just trying to cover both ways i could go here.

I might have something up your alley. First off your not likely to make 100 lb/min happen if you dont have enough turbine, GT45 would be for starters if that engine makes power by itself NA. I have a custom GT4708 chassis but in a 76mm compressor wheel, exducer of the 4708 unit. T4 and T6 housings available can tailor spool vs how much turbine you need.

If interested in info on it psijlowry@gmail.vom

holy.back from the dead

my cousin who had Lou Gherigs Disease (ALS) passed away late 2012, I was his daily care giver so it was especially hard, plus we had a severe house fire April 2013 (we still aren't back in the house) the house didn't collapse but suffered catastrophic smoke damage, we spent 5 weeks in a hotel (almost drove me crazy(er) lol) and since then we've been living in a rental 25 miles from our house (that caught on fire), where my civic is and the garage is too big of a mess from the contractors to work on the car in an orderly manner, plus my mom broke her back as well as both feet and ankles in June, spent 3 weeks in the hospital, had spinal surgery (that failed) and is still in a wheelchair so I've been staying with her and.helping her out as best I can.

all of this has the s13 on hold indefinitely and the same goes for the civic until we get moved back in (it's shoved in a corner surrounded by construction trash)... especially since I've decided that my civic needs to be finished first before I start anymore projects

I was balancing too many builds at once... my civic, the s13, my r1, Porsche, me and my dads z06 track car (circuit), and my recently acquired 1990 accord lx 4dr(daily that needs a little maintenance work)

when juggling that many projects AND trying to work on all of them, you realize there isn't enough money to go around for all of them. so I prioritized... and it was simple to do so

I have the bulk of the parts for my civic, aside from cams, my custom itb intake mani, my wiring harness work, suspension stuff and finishing the chassis so logically it came first

I'll then do some minor stuff to the accord in the quest for power (f22a1)

after that I'll work on the r1 as it only needs bodywork, I'll finish the Porsche at the same time too, assuming i can find a set of cats for it so I can sell it

then comes the s13, it is a ground up rebuild chassis and all, Jew paint, etc.

so I promise I'll update this when work starts. it just depends on when I can get back in the house, get organized, get a job and put in work

I've dealt with too much **** these past few years but I promise all of my projects will be completed
