Not going into first gear could be shift solenoid? overheating could be that, cooling fans, water pump. Depending on your budget I'd shop around, Unless these are small easy to fix problems

If its the tranny it could be $$$. Overheating could be radiator, thermo, coolant, and headgasket. Given the problems I'd say offer the guy $600, and if not pass

If it's full of coolant, and the radiator fans are working, I wouldn't buy it. A radiator is an easy fix, a head gasket, not so much. Not to mention if the guy has been driving it with a bad head gasket, damage has been done.

Edit: If he lets you swap the thermostat on the spot, it won't cost you much. If that fixes the problem, it might be worth it. But who knows about the first gear problem...

I wouldn't even bother with that car. It could turn into a nightmare/money pit.

Don't buy it. $900 could turn into thousands and you will regret. Don't spend your precious time at the shop week in and week out. Unless you know how to restore a car, don't take this option. Even for $200, it's just not worth it.

If you were a mechanic, and have ease with swapping transmissions, sure!

Synchrotech sells some automatic transmissions....or Gearspeed...(rebuilt) I swapped an H22a in mine, Motor, Trans, Ecu....Never regretted it.

Depends on your plans, budget, people rarely fix automatic honda transmissions. They are tough to clean, and pull apart. I have done this. The rebuild is timely, and unless cleaned properly fail shortly after.

Synchrotech will rebuild yours.
