Best ef single can swaps
Very subjective and to be honest there really isn't a "best" one. Either you want a 1.5 or a 1.6 (or maybe a 1.7 but it's already beyond your capability), either you want VTEC or you don't. Research and pick one.
best mpg = d15b6 (68 hp) or d15z7 aka 3 stage vtec (125 hp)
best performance IMO = d16z6 (128 hp) or d15b vtec (125 hp)
"best" overall is the d15 3 stage vtec, 12 valve mode in low rpms (0-3000), 16 valve in mid range (3000-~5800), then the wild vtec cam in high rpms (~5800-redline)

From what I read the D16Z6 and D16Y8 are the way to go. Funny how torque on the B16 is not much more than both of these engines. Makes me wonder why the B series is sought after so much given that the D-series engines are so much cheaper and available.
Because the b16 makes 170hp and the Z6 makes 125. gearing is also much faster in the B16.
I had a z6 with SI trans in my door and it was a good, quick motor that got 40 mpg.

F22A will give you wayyyyy more torque than any of those. Oh yeah, you can use that fancy B16 tranny too.
my d sohc with the si trans pulls hard nothing fancy other than headers and k&n drop in i be pulling on b18s lol ....and i know im gonna get bullshit for saying that but i know its true and they are rolling starts
I say that a dohc zc is the best stock drop in swap for an 88-91 civic/crx. followed by a single cam v.
if you want to go extreem, get a 3 stage vtec motor, mate it to a dx/lx transmission, then bolt on a stock volvo or a 14b turbo. with a good tune, 12v mode = killer mpgs. then vtec + boost = goooooood power.
I have had 4 different sohc with dx/hf/si trans, then went b18a ctr pistons b16 trans ls 5th, now high comp jdm b20b same trans. The torque and mid range of the b20 is just incredible. The ls just can't compare, even with the high compression. If I had to go back to a sohc, I would go zc with dx trans. My old one got 48 mpg hwy, best was 52 mpg.
