does anyone know why honda designed motors like this?
does anyone know why on honda motors they put the oil filters on sidewards...so whenever you change the filter you get a sheet load of oil that comes spilling on your arm?? instead of a straight up design so it doesnt spill!

It still spills when it's straight up and down, just not as much. And, it spills out from the entire circumference....the 2007+ CR-V's are straight up and down and I could never change one without it spilling a little on me arm.
The easiest oil changes are the 2006+ Civics because they're on a slight angle and the oil only spills out predictably in a small stream from one area of the flange.
With the carcinogenic potential of lubricants, I would try to minimize repeat exposures. Wear gloves as PPE.

Because an immaculate design is almost impossible to achieve. There will always be
compromises.
That said, I think D, B, F and H series engines are engineering marvels. For the most
part, these motors are a dream to work on compared to a lot of other makes.
Also, it's possible to avoid getting oil on yourself when removing the filter.
