Cams and mechanical timing ?
I'm in the process of putting my motor together, and I am going to swap out the cam gears. I'm kind of confused here, with cylinder 1 at TDC, both cams should be at 12 o clock am I right? Also, when trying to remove the cam gear bolts, It's just turning the cams in the head. How can I prevent this aside from jamming a screw driver through them? (same for tightening)
So:
Cylinder 1 TDC / Cams ^ at 12 o clock
This correct?

Nope the UP arrows on the cam gears are just a refernece for which they should be facing. There are TDC marks on the cam gears as well. You should be able to see them.
Best way to take off the cam gears is with an air compressor.
To put them back on, put the cams back in the head and tighten the screws until the cams start to turn over. This way you don't scratch up the cams by holding them down with vise grips or what not.

On the actuall cam about 5 inches from the cam gears, there is pretty much a big nut cast into the cam, the wrench is a tad over a 1" so I hope you have one handy....
