AEM standalone. drivable with base map? any info appreciated.
Hey, so here's the deal. We just finished rebuilding my brothers 5th gen prelude with all the bells an whistles- darton mid wet sleeves, blueprinted and machined bottom end, new JE 11.0-1 compression pistons and Golden Eagle rods, rebuilt head and new gaskets everywhere, etc..
So, we found a great deal on the AEM 30-1060 (plug-n-play unit for his car).
The qustion is- Can we run the AEM unit instead of his stock ECU? Not worried about tuning just yet but I would be interested in learning a thing or two about the software and having the ability to monitor any problems that could arise. I have been told the base-map is only to be used to make a quick drive to the dyno where it should be tuned, but I am assuming this is because most ppl buy standalone ecu's for crazy-er builds (ie- cams, turbo, supercharged, etc.) So, does it have the same basic knowledge as the stock ECU and should work fine? or am I going to do damage and just wait till we can see someone about tuning to use it?
-Flame on.

In my opinion the base maps arent safe enough to drive on. They take a bit of work just to get up and running most of the time.
Any additional info people might be able to add would still be appreciated, even if its not consistent with the advice above. Thanks
Well thats another problem. An aftermarket ecu isnt going to run your atts, and you cant tune a stock ecu... If atts is what you want to stick with then you need to be on the lookout for a piggyback type fuel controller that you can alter your fuel curves with. Cery limited but there arent any other options really if you want to keep atts.
Truthfully I wouldnt drive this car anywhere without a tune, thats dangerous especially since you have upped the compression a bit. What else was done to the motor? Any cams?

I agree with Rosko, if you're not planning on big power or changing cams etc, there really isn't a reason to run/buy an AEM computer. I'd just run the stock ecu and kick your timing back a little. Kinda confused as to why you'd build a motor like that if you didn't have any plans to make decent power?
