Default ECU options?

I have a 97 hatch with a B16A2. The harness is an OBD2A and the ECU is an OBD2 P2T. I have 2 O2 sensors plugged in and I am still running a bit too rich. I have a resonator instead of a catalytic converter with an O2 sensor bung.

What would be the best way to help the engine run as healthy as possible? All suggestions and ideas will be much appreciated.

Replace Main 02 sensor with A factory WideBand replacement 02, if all wiring and no cel is in perfect working condition.

If there is no cel the computer should reprogram with wideband to run cleaner. Might still need a tune tho.

And placing 02 down stream will be a better positon to read numbers.

how do you know that the car is running too rich? are you getting any CELs?

i disagree with the others. there should be no need to tune or run a chipped ecu on a stock engine.

Black smoke indicates unburned fuel. Also I shouldnt drive 50 miles and lose a quarter of a tank running 93 octane.

Then mention that in the first post. Sounds like it could be timing. Worst case your rings are going. Check mechanical/ignition timing and/or do a compression test. And B16s require 93 octane? If not then don't use it.

Stock engines don't need a chipped ECU.

if you have a scan tool accessible you should check your fuel trims. if the upstream o2 sensor (before the cat) is good, your pcm should be able to compensate and lower your fuel injector pulse width. with a stock engine you shouldnt have to tune your computer because its soul purpose is to make your car run at 14.7 to 1. unfortunately, the black smoke problem you are talking about could be any number of problems: leaking fuel injector, excessive fuel pressure, iat sensor, maf/map sensor, tp sensor, and/or (this could be a stretch) an ignition timing component such as your crankshaft/camshaft position sensor or your tdc (top dead center) sensor. in any case i would strongly recommend a scan tool so you can determine the functionality of all the cars electronic components. hope this helped and btw if anyone disagrees i would really appreciate some feedback. i dont want to give out false information so if im wrong i would like to know. thanks.
