Default [Video] 93 Hatch - clutch pedal adjustment - possible bad spring?

Hey guys,
I'd like to share with you some clutch pedal issues I am having, hoping you can help me figure it out.

Some facts:
  • For the clutch pedal to come back up when I press it I have to back the adjustment screw all the way (clutch pedal considerably higher than other two)
  • This causes excessive play (first couple of inches of pedal movement are purely mechanical, no clutch disengagement/hydraulics involved)

Yesterday I made a quick video that should show the following:
  • The "play" when screw is backed almost all the way out (for pedal to come back on its own)
  • I turn the adjustment screw a few turns (this lowers the pedal - but we're still in the "pedal play" zone/clutch unaffected)
  • I press the pedal with my hand (not even disengaging clutch, we're still in "pedal play" zone and as you can see, the pedal stays stuck, I have to pull it manually
  • If you look closely, you can see the spring coils shifting in some parts of the video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daf6tACWfyU

So basically I have to set the pedal backed up all the way for it to come back up with the spring, otherwise I have to pull the clutch pedal out with the tip of my shoe everytime I shift.

I am wondering whether or not I have a bad spring. Do clutch pedal springs even go bad?
Is it normal for the whole spring assembly to pivot up and down then the pedal is moved?

Please note, the two endpoints of the spring are in the correct holes of the pedal assembly, but I am wondering whether or not the spring is missing a central rod going through the middle (hard to see in the video, but if you look closely you can see the spring coil assembly moving back and forth with the pedal). I don't see any rod keeping the spring coils in place from this diagram.

Please let me know your thoughts... thanks!

Forgot to mention: slave + master cylinder are less than a year old, and so is throw out bearing (came with ACT clutch, installed during swap).

Problem has existed since then... actually... problem has existed even with my previous bone stock setup (stock D15B8).
So I am isolating the problem to the clutch pedal assembly.

the pedal isnt supposed to push it back. u may need to bleed the system really well. where did you get ur master and slave cylinders? i went thru 3 from oreilys that were bad before i went back to oem.

1st ..there is to much movement at the rod to pedal pin
you can see the pedal moves but the rod does not it should be almost no movement
looks like pin is to small or there is alot of wear (replace Pin or Pedal)

2nd... re the pedal not comming back up this is not normal ..the pedal has a rock over
spring this is there to push the pedal up to the stopper and not add pressure when the
clutch is fully depressed...you can see this action if you disconnect the rod all
together and then move the pedal in its full range of movement

I would remove the pin and check for wear or as to why it moves around so much should be around 15thou fitting ..
I would then check the action of the Rockover spring as to see if its working properly
it should hold the pedal all the way up to the stopper ..
but when pushing the pedal down at the halfway point it should reverse its action and the pedal should pull straight to the floor

I hope this gives you a bit more insight as to how the pedal works and helps you out

I watched it in 720p

Yeah it does look (and feel) like there is some "slop" in the pedal assy, and your video actually better illustrates the slop at the pin where the clutch master cylinder attaches then what I could see in person the other day.

Maybe start off cheap - #4 in the pic here (pic is also clickable to direct site)

$5.03 so you can't go wrong.

Other cheap parts that could tighten things up are the clutch pedal bushings (#22s) and the assist spring (#32) and its bushings/sleeves/collars (#25s, #35s, and #36) seen here (again click ic to go to site):

What do you think?

MRGRIM and Tom, thanks for taking the time to take a look at the video and share your thoughts.

I'll be ordering the parts today, will follow up as soon as they're installed.

Hey man... well, I ordered the parts, just have yet to have the time to pull the pedal assembly, replace components and put it back.

I am thinking about buying a whole pedal assembly from the junkyard, rebuild that and swap it when I am ready. That ought to minimize downtime, since it's my daily and I am ridiculously busy.

I'll follow up when that is done. I plan on looking for a spare pedal assembly today.
