Interested Buyer
Before you say I should have searched the forums the search on this site is terrible. I searched on google quite a bit and picked up info where I could.
Ok so I am coming from the VW scene, and I am most likely buying an S2000 here in the very near future if everything goes as planned.
I know in VWs and Audis there are consistently big maintenance points in the cars life that you need to watch out for and hopefully have done before you buy the car. With that said, what are the big maintenance times on an S2000 both AP1 and AP2? Most of the ones I am looking at are sitting around 70k ish so does a maintenance issue come up in the future?
Also I am torn between a soft top and a hard top. I like the hard top look and stability but love the thought of being able to go topless. So after some research it sounds like you can take off the hard top but it doesn't store in the trunk. So how hard is it to take the hard top off? Also I saw mention of the soft top remaining on the car even with the hard top is on there. Is that OEM? And does this mean even when I remove the hard top if it suddenly starts raining I can put the soft top up?
Thanks for any info guys.

The soft top is connected to the car and folds itself up electronically between the seats and the trunk. The hardtop removal takes less than a minute but should be done by 2 people, I've removed my hardtop on my own but I wouldnt suggest it.
Regardless, from my hours of sifting through useless non-sense on both this site, which has the worst search function I have seen, and even more hours on google (if you actually read the post) I was still unable to find definitive answers.
You took the time to look at the post and fabricate that response. You probably could have answered all of the questions faster than you wrote that post.
Test driving them doesn't answer those questions, because I have driven a few...and well I am still asking.
OMG. Look at what one search on google can result in:
http://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/5487...d-maintenance/
A simple link that goes through many maintenance and other issues you may have with the S2000. This link may or may not answer your previous questions.
Oh, and I was not flaming you. If i did, you'd notice it. You misinterpreted my post. You should research some more as I stated earlier. Come on, man. If you don't already have an S2000 or have had one or have experience with one, you probably should research a tad more before creating a whole new thread like you have. Sorry you spent "hours sifting" without finding an answer. Geez.

See you are providing some useful information to the thread, was that so hard.
As for research, that's what I was doing, and am continuing to do and posting this was a step. I had very specific questions that still was unanswered, at least to me. Sorry I inconvenienced you with this post, I can tell the S2K forums on here are very busy with other more important issues. Forums are meant for threads and replies. Not everyone can jump into a build thread. Some people have questions that they just can't find a conclusive answer to so they ask a question in hope to receive an answer.
Post count is life.
And as for that link, that would be really nice if I already had an S2000 and knew what problem I was having. I found the maintenance guide and most of it was fluffy dealer BS. I still have yet to find something or have someone tell me if I am looking at any serious issues (commonly) in the 50k-100k range.
Coming from the vortex this is some of the weakest flaming I have ever seen.

If you want to learn what goes wrong with the car look at a few pages of the threads? That is whats going wrong and/or braking. Its a Honda not a VW so they really dont have any problems they arnt normal maintenance.
This is what I wanted to know thanks. Because I know in MK4 1.8ts you have water pump and timing belt replacement at 60k. So i just wanted to know if there are any big replacements.
The S2000 is pretty much bulletproof mechanically if taken care of, timing chain so no timing belt, nothing really fails in the motors except the TCT (timing chain tensioner) and the 00-03 valve retainers (they crack easily). The TCT is like 10 minutes to swap out and you can opt for a new one. At stock power levels even a failing TCT is fine in most cases. Regular/frequent oil changes, tranny fluid changes, and diff fluid changes, brakes, and tires will be enough.
Couple years ago I almost bought an S from an original owner that did all the maintenance stuff himself, and it was literally just those maintenance items. 156k on it at the time and it was in great shape.

yeah lol... you don't even need to jack up the car.. just pull that bitch off and put the new one in. didn't think it was that easy until i took my spare motor apart haha

^ just read it...holy **** thats super simple...i was thinking you had to take the timing chain housing off and all kinds of ****...and i actually have a tiny *** oil leak from that spot so i may be doing my TCT soon even though im at 95k miles and it makes zero noise
check this link: http://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/8083...ent-or-repair/
I've done it once before to get rid of the noise. (I've repaired the one I have, I didn't have to buy a new one.)
they are pricey.

Glad some people are down to help haha.
I am out of my realm on JDM cars, hand me a euro car and I am good to go.
Thanks for the heads up on the TCT but looks simple enough.

every time I buy a used car the first thing i do is change out the spark plugs, do a oil, trans and diff fluid change, and also the belt just for my own peace of mind, and i would recommend running AMSOIL
some of the best fluids for the price

theres really nothing major that needs to be done. i got mines with 69k since then iv done the tct and valve adj. its at 118k now and no problems what so ever. Iv also done all the fluids too. theres really no need to replace the retainers on the ap1 if u know how to drive dont money shift (like a gay) and they r not cracked. one other thing that i would recommend doing is over torque the rear axels they r under torqued from the factory and this causes premature bearing failure.
any ht oem or after market fits over the oem softop when folded. so if u have a ht and wana got **** out just remove the ht and if it rains or gets cold or w/e u can still put up the oem softop.
its a honda dude not to go bashing on "german engineering" this thing is fairly cheap and easy to maintain not to mention u can beat the living **** out of it and have no problems aslong as u know how to beat on a car (im not talking about clutch dumps at 9k)
