Which GTX3071R Turbo is best for a Forged B18C4?
Hi everyone
I was hoping TheShodan could kindly give me some opinion as to which exhaust housing I should go for in my turbo build.
I am looking to buy a Garrett GTX3071R and wanted to know which exhaust side option would suit my build and power plans best:
Spec
- B18C4 Block
- Custom fat liners
- CP 9:1 Turbo Pistons
- Forget H Beam Rods
- Fully balanced
- ITR Flywheel
- High pressure Oil Pump
- ACL Race bearing
- Full 3" exhaust
- ITR DC2 Camshafts
- Bloxs Intake Manifold
- Hondata Intake Gasket
- B16A2 Fuel Rail
- 510 Injectors
- 69mm Throttle Body
- DOC Racing Manifold
Pictures

The three options are:
- Garrett T3 V Band 1.06
- Garrett T3 V Band .82
- Garrett T3 V Band .63
I am looking to make between 300 and 400 bhp.
My car is a road car and I am not looking to build a Trackday monster.
I have a S9B Gearbox with an S80 5th gear to give me lots of top speed fun on the Autobahn.
I still have my full interior in the car and want the turbo to spool quickly and make good power up to 8K rpm
The B18 I am using is a small engine and I know that the 1.06 is too and would spool to late.
Ideally I would like the turbo to come in between 3.5 and 4K and pull all the way to 8K.
Should I go for the .82? or is that still too big?
Oh, and this is the car its going into:

Many Thanks for your help and input :-)

.82 should spool just fine on a B series.. I have the same turbo with a .63 but on a d16y8 and it gets into full boost pretty quick..
For a modest goal of 400hp, the .63 a/r will be the best choice. I personally like the .82 better as it doesnt spool that much later, but it doesnt sound like you will use the extra power it can make.
Wow... I feel popular..how flattering.
I like the 60mm turbine wheel in the .63A/R version of the turbocharger specifically for that engine. Looks like you seem to drive more long courses than the short ones. It would specifically be 803712-1. This one has the 60mm wheel shared with the GT3076R (one of my favorite wheels) and though I don't believe what the compressor map says it can do from using one of these on a couple of projects (from a power standpoint), I still think this is a great choice to use on that B18C4 engine. I was going to create a video review of this turbo this week to give my impressions. Its very nice.
Good choice

Just to summarise your post above, are you saying that I should go with the smallest Exhaust Side (0.63), and the turbo will spool up early (~3k) and hold boost all the way till 8k rpm?
Could you shed some more light on the spool characteristics, based on the flow of a B18c4 engine with 9:1 CP Pistons?

Thank you for the quick reply. I will wait for your Video Review :-)

Booo! after LOTS of searching, many phone calls and sleepness nights, I have come to the conclusion that I can't afford the $1700 for a GTX.
Oh well, can't have everything in life. Bought a 5558 Billet Precision Turbocharger with .63AR which should hopefully spool up quick enough.

Shodan is right.
I use the 3071 (60mm wheel and 0.63AR) on a B18C6.
This combination is awsome. Spoolup, throttle response are great.
I had a back to back comparrison to a 0.82AR housing.
The 0.63 feels much quicker and faster when you hit the pedal.

Listen to the shodan...thats why the turbo will be the last purchase for me when that time comes. It is expensive but it depends what your use is.

Nice car!
750cc are on their way ;-)
I went for a journal bearing and know that this turbo is "not as good" but still a decent turbo.
The car is not a Track day toy and I want to enjoy driving it on the road.
Yes, we'll see how that turns out. Though at 10psi I don't think it will be an issue

Hi I am about to turbo my civic race car in the UK. It has a B16B head and a B18C bottom end. I'm thinking of a full-race ram horn manifold, and am getting conflicting advice as to whether to go for a gt28 rs or a gt30 or a gtx30 turbo. Can you help please??? Any advice on intercoolers, wastegates and bov s (tial? ) would also be very welcome. Thanks! Rhodri Jenkins
In point of the turbo contact TheShodan.
You are located in the UK. I come from Germany. So I could help you with manifold and intercooler. If you plan to road race your car or if you want to use it on the Nürburgring or the "Autobahn" than use a manifold that allows you to run a thick full size radiator!

I have a BNIB GTX3071R with the .63 exhaust housing ready to go onto my CRX this summer... I'm looking forward to the results after reading threads like this
