Default Problem with neutral safety switch

Hi all, I am having a problem starting my 97 lx accord as it was initially only starting in neutral and the key was stuck in the ignition and would not release. Seemed to be an obvious neutral safety switch issue, so I replaced it and now nothing, won't even start in neutral anymore. So I put the old one back in and now it won't start in neutral anymore. In addition, the gear indicator lights on the cluster used to show what gear I was in except when in park, but now they just show D4 and nothing else. When I looked at the switch installed, there is a gap of about an 8th of an inch between the contacts on the switch and the metal spindle that is in there. Should they be touching? I also understand that there is a gear switch too on this model or is it the same as the neutral safety switch? Now I dont know what I did but need to get some ideas of whats going on. It looks like the metal arm has to be making contact with the switch to read it, but dont see why its not touching it, or maybe it just needs to be close? Thanks in advance.

It was pretty stupid really....initially I didn't realize that there was a slider on the inside of the nss and that the spindle arm had to be inserted into it. When I installed it the slider had slid to one side and was partially hidden and I didn't see it until I saw the diagram of it and how it worked. Duh! Thanks again.

Yes, (1) shifter has to be in Park (P) and; (2) the slider has to also be in the parking position, where the pin is in the switch slider as shown.

ok. So the part with the harness that connects on the outside of the vehicle, behind the front passenger side wheel, doesnt have to be in any certain position as long as its connected and bolted down? And then once that is done, I just follow the diagram?
