I have a b16 in a ek hatch its been having a lil misfire that's been bugging me since i got the car. Last night I decided to do a leak down test since we did one In a friends car. Cyl 2 had a leak about 60% kinda sounded it was leaking through a spark plug hole. Opened the throttle body and you could hear air escaping. So I assumed it was a intake valve or two. I pulled the head off right now to found my second cam cap intake side was scored along with the cam. Pulled the head and valves look fine sprayed carb cleaner in each port none leaked. Now I'm confused of where the air was leaking through. Only thought I have is through cyl 1 through a blown head gasket, but wouldn't that cause me to over heat? I'm stuck on what to try next. Smh all of this due to a tiny misfire lol. Any help is appreciated as this is my daily driver for work. Thanks in advance.

 

Is the head cracked?

 

I hope not. I'm taking it to the machine shop tomorrow see what they say.

 

Did you ever put some oil in the cyl and do a leak down or comp test? Maybe it is getting past the rings and the air is going through the pcv into the intake. Kind of far fetched, but a thought

 

Nothing else was leaking the car was just ran. And te motor was rebuilt about 2500 miles ago. The leakage was about 5% all the way across except for cyl2

 

Before work bump. Hopefully my girl drops off the head early enough where they could tell me today. Now I'm debating if I should just drop in my Gsr I jut finish rebuilding on just the Gsr head.

 

Correct me if im wrong, but i believe cam scoring is caused by over tightening
the timing belt. Only other thought i have is that the head is cracked, or your head gasket might be slightly blown. It is possible that its so minimal that it causes a misfire but wont actually overheat the car. Was there any coolant in the oil or vice versa?

 

Over tightening the belt? Cam caps were torqued down to 24lbs if I remember. I had just rechecked them about 2 months ago too. No oil in water or vice versa. Hopefully I'll find out today.

 

So I just called the machinist and my head is too screwed the cam ate too much into the head. That was the reason for intake valves leaking. I guess I'll slap on my Gsr head tonight. Wanted to do the swap due to living in duplexes with one car garage being used up by parts and quads the head swap will do for now.

 

If anyone knows of a bare b16 head please let me know thanks.

 

Yes ive seen it before. People will use a pry bar when tightening the timing belt down (not saying you did) and it pulls the cams together and down scoring all the cam caps and head. Since it was bad enough to cause your valves to leek im guessing that wasnt the problem.

 

I haven't heard of that happening before. Hopefully runs good with the Gsr head for now.

 

Yeah it doesnt happen very often cause most people are smart enough to know what they are doing. But there are some people who just should work on cars -_-
