Default ls/vtec cam/camshafts upgrade worthy?

On an stock ls/vtec setup, would cam gears & camshafts be an significant upgrade? B16 head and B18b1 bottom end. N/A build. Must be streetable.

OT: I have bolt-on's/custom mid pipe hooked up to the OEM muffler. Am I being held back some by using the OEM muffler? I actually like how its somewhat quiet city driving.

So you're not catted?

Exhaust flow is all about EGT Velocity. Soooo many factors lol.

But to answer your question, yes you can benefit from
cams/cam gears, but it's all in your tune in the end. You can only do so much with a stock ecu and cam gears only because of eventual fuel issues.

You also need to watch and research lift/duration and all that to make sure your stock valvtrain can handle the cams. There are many charts that show stock vs. upgraded cams and a million threads discussing it I'm sure!

whoops, it does have an Mugen ECU. I knew I left something out. 4-2-1 headers connected to test pipe to OEM muffler.

Yes the stock muffler is restricting flow. But cams and cam gears will give you a nice little gain. I would throw in a better pump and bigger injectors and get it tuned after too.

With stock compression I'd run either 00 ITR or CTR cams or some Stage 1 cams. You do not need a new fuel pump or injectors. I guarantee you will not be pushing over 200whp. Stock fuel pump and injectors can handle anything below that simply fine.

I know they aren't needed but to get the most out of a tune you should.

If the hardware is already able to support what is needed. Getting the most out of a tune is up to the tuner.

The tune will be done at DnR Performance. About how much power gain will I see using streetable cams (ie: stage 1, ITR/CTR) with a good tune?

It depends a lot on your mods, but you could probably see 170-180 with ITR and a slight bit more with stage 1. I think maybe the 180 range is healthy for a car with stage 1 and bolt ons.

I know that of they are a good tuner they can squeeze all the possible horsepower he can out of it but if you are spending the money on a tune you might as well throw more fuel at it to get more out of the tune since he will probably want to look into injectors later down the road and having to get it tuned again when he does. Just do it all at once
