WD40 is a truly terrible way to try and quiet any noise down. It isn't intended to provide lasting lubrication, so even if it does fix anything the issue will return in days.

i have the same issue in my 90 CRX Si

when it's cold out, more so.. but it squeeks a little as is spins right under the dash/gauges

remove dash, remove cable, clean/oil cable? put it all back together.

Mine did that too.pull it from the back of the speedo and the Trans.pull the cable out of its sleeve.use grease to coat the cable (lightly but a Lil extra won't hurt).reinstall..
