n00b needing turbo advice
hi im skyler, im a car enthusiast and have spent awhile trading around cars just to try out as many as i can, i started out with a built 67 barracuda( will never get rid of it), im a v8 enthusiast but have always held respect for what a well built 4 cylinder can do. so when i came across a civic with a built boosted gsr swap....i thought its time to try out honda. the set up is
built gsr b18c1, built bottom end, less than a year on build
sleeved with block guard,
9.1:1 forged pistons
aluminum rods
ls vtech head with skunk 2 cams
750cc injectors on benen rail
jg eddy intake
greddy bov and 10lb wastegate
hondata s200 tuned by forged
and the weak links...stock clutch, ebay turbo at 10psi
now the car is quick, but the dam ebay turbo dosent give full boost till past 55000 in 3rd gear, and it often blows the gasket between the turbo and manifold. after i got it i looked around, and the cast iron manifold is warped at the flange, and fuel spits out with the exhaust(bad tune? idles at 1400). so i have a couple questions, first one is has anyone had experience with the ebay ram horn turbo manifolds? ive read some good some bad, but havent specifally read about the ram horn ones, next will a ball bearing t3/t4 like a garret or turbonetics fit my application best or can i find a better fit? a "honda guy" i know reccomended a t25...im new to this but that sounds small, an second should i go 3 or 6 puck clutch, and whats the best bang for the buck? my goal by the end is to have 350-400whp after a visit to english racing an better set up. i dont hot rod the car so dont worry im gonna blow it up by running too much power, might track it once or twice a year and i DO NOT street race, would 15-17psi sound reasonable for my goal, would more be safe? have a budget around 1500 thanks a lot sorry the post is so long haha ive only had it a couple weeks but it has surprised me as being a nice fun to drive comfortable practical vehicle, it may be one i hold on to!

sounds like you have alot more issues then just a turbo and flywheel.
Find out why your idle is at 1400
get a new manifold
your tuner will know how much boost to set for your projected goal
ask "the shodan" about the 'reaper' turbo.. seems to be the new hot turbo around here

glad to hear a second opinion on the t25, i dont like to disagree with some one im asking advice from when i dont actually know for sure so glad i can rule that out, an i sent a pm about the reaper. i think im going to try the ebay ram horn manifold, even if it cracks i have a fab shop an can weld stainless so no biggie
You've been Pm'd. But let's talk more about what you want out of this car and the setup you have. The E-bay kit alone is not the greatest start (as most people figure out quickly), but we can salvage it to work better for you. The Reaper is a serious turbo for serious runners. This actually might be too big for your needs. What are you trying to do with this car?
Stop listening to your "Honda Expert". Because suggesting a t25 for a B18c1 is more than a horrible idea.

just replied, and a little more about my needs, like i said im looking for 400 daily with occaisional track in the summer, do wanna try for some good 1/4 times, so would you guys reccomend a standalone system so i could run lower boost daily an turn it up for the occaisional race? have no idea what id need for that lol

you do not need a stand alone for hondas. just a chipped ecu with hondata or neptune. i recommend the neptune myself since i been using it for years and alot cheaper then hondata. but you cant go wrong with either one
A sleeved block with a blockgaurd? I have been around Honda tech a while (lurking) and haven't seen that before....interesting, common?
I wouldent bother, just wondering if it common?

ive found it a topic of a few discussions on other forums and some people say you should do it an others say it caaaan cause overheating complications, but it had it so its their

Lowering boost for daily depends upon how well the tuner is able to calibrate fuel and timing for the engine given the turbocharger and the rest of the setup. 400whp could be done on 93 octane, but characteristics could be different when you go to the drag strip vs. the street. If a turbo is too large, you could run "low boost', but it will be horribly unresponsive and laggy, only to work well at the dragstrip. If too small, you could still run a reasonable amount of pressure without worrying about if it 'stresses" the engine, and still run at the track. those are the differences in characteristics.
there are literally 15 different combinations that I could think of to make this power. the differences are the characteristics between the types.
thanks i'll look into those! and i guess id want a turbo that will spool up quicker vs. quarter mile run, a good in between size, i still needa to take a look at the cams but been working OT and master clutch cyliner just went out on me
@boostedb18ccoupe: (5857 or 30r. hx30 for budget ). You gotta give some reasons WHY this is the better choice than just spouting off 3 companies. You know very well that there are over 20 combinations ranging from $700-$1500 to choose from. Give details, specifics, not just because you've "seen" setup do X, Y or Z. The Holset option is viable but not without a lot of work between the manifold and the turbine exhaust inlet. As this may be his first (and hopefully only) setup, you need to understand that the Holset loses its attractive "budget" status once he tries to integrate everything together.
Checkout Californiadad's setup (B18C Build Assembly-thread). Read that from page 1, and go all the way to the end. Remember, he's on 91 octane fuel so there are going to be a few variances in power based upon the compression of 9.0:1 that you have.
Keep checking!!! Don't take this lightly. Do some good research, think before you ask your questions, and we're all here to help.
Viva la BOOST!!
Hopefully I can help with the little I know.
Which skunk 2 cams do you have? Reason why I ask is because that will weight a little on my response of what turbocharger's would fit your set-up.
Find out why your idle is at 1400 RPM's... Leaking vacuum lines or gaskets. Or leak with the charge pipes, possible cracked manifold, or intercooler itself. Do a boost leak check.....
Honda guy, really? More like hyundai guy.... Don't listen to that hyundai guy.
As far as boost or psi's, That will depend on the turbocharger you get AND the cams you have which we dont know exactly which ones you have. You block is sleeved so the amout of psi's shouldnt be an issue. Its all in the tuning anyways.....
Those 750cc injectors might work. If your aiming for 400HP, you will probably be at 90% duty cycle but it should work pending what turbo and cams you get.
What size throttle and intake manifold?
Clutch wise, since you have a budget, competition clutch stage 4 or 5. I have a stage 4 and its holding fine. I installed a stage 4 in April 2011, daily driven, sat on the dyno, did about 40 something pulls, raced it down the track like 30 times and occasional street race and still holding good....
My two cents. Hope to hear your response.....
