Default Can you strip off the top coat of paint on a bay. more info inside help please

So long story shot I picked up a 2000 SI EBP that has been painted black.

The out side was done by a body shop but the bay and jams were done by the owner and its shitty to say the least.

The bay is starting to flake and the EBP in the bay under the black coat is still in good shape.

Whats the easiest way to get the black off with out damaging the original blue. I have a pressure washer that i'm going to try but if that doesn't work i would like to have a plan b lined up.

Thanks in advanced guys.

Fine grit sandpaper. Or acetone/lacquer thinner if the PO did the paintwork with spraybomb and the underlying paint is urethane (all OEM paints are.)

Yes to both cases. A fine grit sandpaper (1000 or 1500) can remove the top layer and leave the bottom layer intact if you are very careful.

It if is spraybombed on, lacquer thinner is the way to go. It may take some scrubbing so get lots of spare towels and a gallon of lacquer thinner and go to town on that bad. Wet sanding is hard in the bay area because of all the curves and nooks.

Yeah, I agree that would lead to some very sore finger tips. Wet sanding is the last straw.

Thinner and some lint frees it is. Ill def post pics of the progress, Ill have to do the jams also.

If anyone else has any input please post up.

Thanks again.

Yes yes, I agree with this as well. Wouldn't hurt anything, just be careful if your engine is in the bay.

Definitely a good idea. Do you know what kind of paint it is?

Yeah, considering it is chipping already, probably spray paint. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
