I am planning on building my motor for turbo its a d16y8 with about 125k on it very well maintained. Just curious if i should piece it together or buy a kit. I have alot of experience workin on cars and i plan on poss keeping bottom end if poss butt honing and all. Just getting ideas. Thanks

 

deffinately getting a complete brand new one saves you the hasssle of trying to look for the parts.
you mite spend a little less if u are piecing, but you will probably get used parts or worst, defected parts with no warrantee.....

 

yea that it very true. ive also heard of people buying ebay kits and just buying better turbos and plumbing kits. ive been looking around for both ways. saving up during winter

 

yea thats another way around, im personally running a ebay intercooler, charge pipes and blow off valve, it seems to do the job just fine, but manifold is a custom built ramhorm with good thick SS material, turbo is garrett and wastegate is tial. i end up spending about 1700 on the complete kit including cutting & welding labor.

 

nice. i really like those manifolds. theyre sick. i was just looking at ebay kits. ive been trying to find sites that just sell turbos and not kits. I'm gonna call around to companies and check them out. i found a site for all the hardware and plumbing. if you have any recomended sites or anything please let me know if you dont mind

 

ebay turbo? or brand name turbo?

 

While this is my 2nd boosted D motor, this one has 135K miles and I bought it used. While I have no idea of how the motor used to be treated, in my mind it does not matter. Now you can disagree that is fine but I have seen blue printed motors blow up so either way its a 50/50 shot, unless you do things right. Make sure you run a BOV and a wastegate, get a good turbo like a Greddy, Mitsu, or Garrett, and a great tune. You can piece one together but good parts do not come cheap and unfortunately those parts listed are the most expensive. I personally run a turbo timer as well to help prolong the life of the turbo but not 100% needed as well as a catch can. What is not listed on ebay is the cost of the tune which can run $600 or more. Just take your time and people here will help you out, or send me a PM and I will try my best to give you a good direction.
