Icon3 ***Is it okay to run turbo in the winter?***

As the title says, im running a boosted gsr, just 7lb right now in the winter. everyone says im stupid for still driving the car but its my daily and i need to get to point a and b everyday to work and errands. the turbo is facing toward the tranny too so it cant have a cover over it, only a debree net. its not the otherside how everyone has it. I do let the car warm up for about 20 min before i drive it, and the TT(Turbo Timer) is set to 30 sec idle so all the oil goes wherever it needs to before the car shuts off

i just want to know how it is, like do i need special oil n such
i live in oregon so we get alot of rain
or should i really just not drive the car... nd somehow find another DD.

early thanks!

you can drive a turbo car fine in the winter.... leting the car idle for 20min... how much gas do you waste ever week doing that. couple of min is good enough

alot of people have the compressor side facing the tranny side. get someone to fab you some some piping to fit a filter,
my is facing towards the tranny and heres a pipe of my setup

i have been driving my turbo setup all winter long the past 5 years or so with no issues...except for everything rusting and seizing up...also you do not need to let it idle 20min before you take off...just a couple min is fine.

depending on how cold it gets where you are any 5w30 engine oil is fine. you can use a 0w30 if it gets very very cold or if you want better oil flow on startups.

Komat you have the same exhaust manifold setup as i do lol. I burn alot of gas just driving.

but thanks again guys i feel alot safer driving the car now lol. i really do need to get a custom piping just like komat. it rains here ALOT.

i heard 5w30 is good for the winter since oil gets thicker when it gets cold. but ppl say it burns to fast?
im currently running 10w30 pure motor oil, not synthetic

hell i dont even let mine warm up.. wasting gas letting it idle sounds stupid. every other car gets cranked up and driven right away.. why do our cars need to do it? its not like your cranking it up and doing a 4th gear pull.

Tupercivicr93. do you have the stock undertray still on?

well the way i see it, cold + instant heat = cracks. just like if you add water in a hot radiator. ive always learned off a 60 sec rule, but just to be safe i let it idle for a bit longer.

i dont have the undertray anymore, thats what im always worried about everytime i drive over a puddle

15w50 ??? If the motor isnt built for sucha thick oil you should NOT be running it. Different oil weights are for specific bearing clearences. honda's run tight clearence and should not be ran on such thick oil. Whats yrou reasoning behind that thick of an oil? CA doesnt even get that hot to where it would thin way out.

i think the same heat comes from idling and light driving... but nothing to say about being cautious

If it is below freezing do a two minute cool down not 30 seconds. Longer if you have been driving hard.

A 2 minute warm up is more then sufficient to start driving. Just don't open up the throttle until you have normal operating temperature.

Oil weight should be 5-30 or 0-30. 10 or 15-30 is way too thick for winter.
