Default quaife lsd install??

I have a jdm gsr lsd tranny and the jdm lsd went out on me, so i decided to replace it with a quaife lsd.
I used the old bearings off the diff (taper roller style) and i got everything on the new diff.
Put everything back together and I have a lot of side to side play. Like its needing to be shim.
I thought on the taper style roller bearings that you dont have to shim in really.
Can anyone give me some insight on this deal.
Thank you!

What do you mean by "side to side play"? Without the case on? Or with the case on torqued down?

As for if something needs shimmed... any set of two bearings that sits enclosed on the outside by a housing will need thrust clearance set. You need to get a special tool (or make one which I did) and use a "needle readout" inch/lb torque wrench (very pricey for a quality one!) to measure the correct thrust clearance for the tapered bearings.

with the case on torque down and the ring snap in place
you can hear it just rattling in there.

What do you need it bumped for?

You clearly didn't select the proper shim for your install and need to get on doing so. I listed what you essentially need to do this properly for the tapered bearings. You need a swing-style torque wrench that reads between 0-50 in-lb and a "tool" that will adapt that torque wrench to fit to the differential. Once these are in place, you measure the bearing preload by turning the torque wrench/diff.

Or you can pull those bearings back off and switch to the enclosed ball bearings Honda offers for late-model GSR/ITR diffs and all you need is a feeler gauge to measure preload/thrust clearance.

As great as the internet is, it will not physically do any of these tasks for you.

They weren't opinions, they were merely stated facts, it's a pain in the *** to shim tapered roller bearings (and yes they do need to be shimmed) which is why no one uses them.

Go with the ball bearings OEM# 91005-P80-E31. You will need the snap ring style shim usually 1.45mm but you should still check the clearance to be sure.

i had a jdm viscious lsd in mine then i ended up buying the quaife.
When the jdm one went out it got really hard to turn and the wheel would just want to kick back to going straight.
Here is my other thread about me asking about the diff going out.
