Put what Honda reccomended for the engine. IMO that is 87.
I run 87 in my 98 dx with 210k on it. No issues what so ever, and amazing MPG on the highway.

that what i thought too i been using 87 with no problem intill i failed smog test the people at autozone told me to switch to a higher grade of gas to lower my nox since my miles is high
I run 87 from Shell. From time to time I'll use Chevron. I have learned that 87 from Arco makes my car run like a slug. Its horrible.
People say gas is gas is gas since it all comes from the same place, but each company has their own detergents they add to the gas. I have seen a gain of MPG when using Shell vs Arco in multiple cars.

get a second opinon from a shop, don't trust Autozone.
half of them can't you anything their computer doesn't tell them. The other half, are so ****ing stupid they think they know everything. I can't tell you how many times I have proved autozone, oriley's and other stores employees wrong. ASE my ***!

If you are failing might fail NOX, best thing to do is change your O2 and catalytic converter. I just did a test only and failed NOX and tagged gross polluter. New cat and O2 and I'm fine. I have 233K on my car.

I'll glady pay more for most parts and go to a performace shop. Simply for the lack a headache.
I will only go to autozone for oil, and car wash stuff. That's it. I usally never to oriley's, on top of that autozone was 10-15 cheaper for the same oil change.

Use whatever gas you are supposed to use for the vehicle which is like most people have been saying is 87 and don't get the cheapo gas. The older cars were not ment to use ethanol in gas. I work for an environmental company and I have helped set up a few ethanol systems. Then the additives from the different company's are different which helps change how the gas is burned. I'm not saying the problem is your gas and I'm just stating little bit that I do know.
I doubt its the converter causing high NOx. excessive NOx is formed under excessively high temperatures in the combustion chamber.
my bet is you're running lean - likely caused by either a failing O2 sensor or a vacuum leak. other causes that shouldn't be ruled out are spark timing too far advanced and excessive carbon build-up in the chamber.
