I have a 1992 Automatic Honda Accord Ex with approx 210k. The other day while driving I noticed that when taking off from a stop light the car appeared to be in 3rd or 4th gear. I've had this happen before so I manually shifted the gears to get home. When this happened before I thought it was the transmission so I had a trans shop look at it and they said nothing mechanically seems to be wrong with the trans. By accident the mechanic corrected the problem by removing the neg battery cable (resetting the transmission computer). So when the problem happened the other day I did the same thing as all is well for now. My question is: What can I do to keep from having to do this? Is there a part that's faulty on the transmission that I can replace?

Most likely if you have faulty shifting or weirdness check the TCU.

I had the same exact prob on my '90. The shifter wouldnt come out of park, had to use shift release button. Also, when pulling from a stop light i had to put car into 2nd gear then into 4th. I pulled a TCU out of a wrecked car and put it in. Prob Solved.
