Is it safe to downshift to 2nd while doing 60 on the highway?
For the jdm ITR engine? About what rpm would that bring me to? When people try to race you from a roll on the highway do you ITR owners downshift to 3rd or 2nd? Thanks.
I think these cars max out at about 62mph in 2nd gear. Definitely don't downshift to second gear on the freeway. 3rd is what you want.
BTW: There is no way to protect your engine from over-revving when downshifting. The momentum of the car can easily speed to the engine up past the 10k mark with or without fuel.
If you do manage this, typically the clutch disk will explode from spinning too fast once the shift lever drops into gear. That is before you even let the clutch out. Then it's bye-bye clutch and hello toe-truck. This happened to my best friends STi. If the clutch disc manages to hold together, the next thing to go will be the valvetrain. Once the valve floats off the cam lobe from it's inertia, it either hits the dome of the piston, or crashes back into the cam/rocker-arm causing it to shatter. If that happens, it's bye-bye engine.

Find the appropriate tranny in the calculator above and see the rpm. 60 mph is about top rpm in many of the Honda 5 speeds and dowm shifting to 2nd would already at the top, or over the top rpm range. Failure as noted.

More than likely, it is unsafe. You should be in 3rd anyhow. If you were to downshift at the wrong time, you will bend a valve and break the valve guide dropping the valve into the piston, thus make confetti from the pistons.

Ok I definitely won't attempt that.
Now, does downshifting into 3rd at highway speeds give a sufficient enough boost to keep up with srts and z28 cameros? I'm guessing it probably wouldn't beat stis, but I'm not sure of what the ITR is capable of given the 200 HP, but low torque.

LOL.
If you want to beat a fast Neon, go to a road course with short straights and many tight turns.
Same with Z28s.

I believe you've all been trolled on. Look at the comical screen name. Look at the terrible topic. Look at the obvious hints of trolling intelligence in the response.
You've all been had!

Nope, no trolling here.
The reason for my curiosity about the downshift is that I am planning on getting an ITR swapped into an LS shell. When I had my 01 GSR and downshifted to 3rd from 60 I really didn't think it was all that quick. Now, I understand that the JDM ITR has 30 more HP than the GSR, but being that the torque is still similar I suspected that it wouldn't be ALL that much faster than my GSR.
I've never drove or even been in an ITR, so I had no frame of reference regarding what it could do from personal experience.
I don't think that z28 camaros or srts are the fastest cars or even good cars, but they certainly aren't slow. They definitely don't handle like an Integra, especially a Type-R or GSR, but the question was regarding straight line racing from a roll.

seriously, wtf???????
I'm not usually the flaming type, but this thread warrants it. OP please don't be 1) asking questions like this again, 2) why would you ever need to drop to 2nd gear doing 60 on the highway??
^ don't answer......it's a rhetorical question

there is no way a stock itr motor will keep up in an srt4 in a straight line, mild build/ turbo that bish and then it would be a good race.......
BAHAHAHAHAHAH....this thread is so fail. But please when you do it post a video so we can watch you grenade the motor.

your engine don't do it.
