What kind of car?

Most if not all the 1988-up civics have the oil dipstick located where the front of the engine is where the exhaust manifold sits.

The looped handle of the dipstick should be yellow or orange.

1. Crank the engine and let it run briefly. Then shut the engine off.

2. Pull out the dipstick.

3. Wipe off the dipstick with a cloth or whatever.

4. Reinsert the dipstick

5. Pull out the dipstick again.

If your oil is closer to the second dot - the onbe closest to the handle or the top - then you have enough oil.

If the oil is on the lower dot then add about 1 quart of oil.

Contrary to popular belief you cannot really tell if you need an oil change just because the oil is dark. You can change oil in a car, crank it up, and check it immediately and it can already be black as black can be after only 5 minutes of running.

Good luck!

After Tom's step 1. I just want to clarify that you should shut the engine off. Running the engine as you check the oil could lead to putting too much oil in. This probably shouldn't even be mentioned, but I'm sure it happens.

Have a good day.

The car must be parked on level ground to get an accurate measurement.
