Default cooling system/temp sensor help...

i recently purchased a 92 prelude s, 2.2 5 speed etc. i have a problem with fans not turning on, unless the a/c is on. my friend said its probably a temp sensor. there is one near the thermostat housing and one on a piece on the front of the block. what would these be called if i should replace them? what else could it be? or which one, (if this would be a better option) would be the one to wire up a manual fan switch. any help is greatly appreciated, im stumped...havent dealt much with cooling systems. thanks.

Look up a wiring diagram to see which one controls the fans and test that one to see if its working properly. Dont just buy parts without testing to see which one might be bad.

k20, out of curiosity, is the car also hard to start in the morning or in cold weather?

I had a temp sensor problem and that was how it manifested itself. It didn't overheat, but the hard starting was my symptom.

Yes, if the ECT is bad, it'll show -40 which is what the ECU will see. The ECU thens tells the injector to dump in hella fuel in causing it to hard start because you need rich mixture to start a cold engine due to poor fuel atomization. So it takes a bit to start up.

sounds like the sensor on the head. Not the one with a single wire, that goes to the gage on the dash.

Thermostat housing one will work if you wanted to make a manual switch.

Is your car overheating though? My fan pretty much never goes on, but my car never overheats either (aftermarket gauge, the stock one blows). I get the correct resistance reading from the fan switch and the fan definitely works.
