cut springs....yeah I said it!
Ok so here's the deal I wanna lower my 99 civic. I've done drops on my civic....with cut springs at that. I can do it no problem the only thing I need to know is how much to cut off? Ok before people start flaming I've had cut spring's on two of my cars and they rode better than it did than my integra with adjustable coilovers. And I have a baby on the way so I don't want to slam it, but just get rid of the wheel well gap.
Oh and can I just loosen the bolts on the top with allen wrench before I take the springs out and just raise it up slow???? If not ill just go rent the coilover tool from oreilly.
wait!, You have a baby on the way and you want to cut your springs?
Why not save up a couple bucks and go find some used lowering springs? Or better yet, leave the car at stock for your baby's sake.
Did your integra have no name coilovers?

There is a major amount of stored energy in those springs and I highly recommend going and renting those spring compressors. Its cheap and you get ALL your money back, I know its not expensive cause I used to work there. SO for you babies sake go rent them and keep from hurting yourself. On another note I agree with 98civdx.

I've done it, without a compressor, out of of the car, hit the top hat bolt with impact, the spring will "pop" out but wont go flying. 3-6'' is all I saw in the few times i done it. The rear barely budges, the front is the one that will move a bit. I know

Only thought I would say this because I really really hate the spring compressors parts stores have/sell. I do have one, and it can be a PITA to use.
Where I don't disagree with you, nor will I argue about it. But, the springs really wont turn into missiles like people believe. They do have energy stored in them, but not enough to really harm anything.

I'm not sure about the coilovers on the integra, I think they where cause my head went through the sunroof and I've never had anything remotely close to how my integra was.
it's easy for anyone to cut a spring, being a welder doesn't make it easier or harder.
I've never only cut one, it was 3 or 4 and the cars were ****ing slammed! I don't remember exactly how many.
I've got experience with cut/heated springs on Honda's. Your heading down a HORRIBLE path.
One car we cut, was totaled, (also totaled 2 others in the process), and the other had major front end/frame damage after smacking a barrier and going under it.
Both drivers who are my good friend's lost control of the car. second one was without a doubt going too fast, but none the less, the cut springs played a roll in both accidents.
If you want I'll go further in depth on the accidents later.
Ask your self, is loosing the wheel gap without doing it correctly worth possibly endangering your baby?

Man, you knew it was a bad idea, but you still insisted on posting a thread?
I pray for your child, and for you. You can find proper lowering springs for like $180.

What brand are they? I've never heard of somebody wrecking due to cut springs I've had a slammed civic for three years and never had one problem due to them being cut. I lost control one time but that was because it was early and I was driving too fast on an entrance of a highway but I still kept it on the road.
When you cut a spring you efectively raise the spring rate of that spring. So if you have 250 lbs springs or 350 or whatever you will have stiffer springs when you cut it. So it will ride worst.
That is why lower springs are design to keep your spring rate with lower stance.
No name coilover sleves are a p.o.s. We change them here at the shop all the time. And most if not all of them blow the shocks or bend the rods.
Happy ebay buyers can get them for 25 dollars. And probably pay 600 to get their suspension fixed.
Just buy a good quality set of lowering springs from a reputable shop.

First car was wrecked after it went over railroad tracks, car bounced uncontrollably. This caused the driver to loose control of the car while trying to stop it. Slid into the back of a jetta, then pushed that into a EF hatch. He said he was doing 30-35, and didn't know the tracks were there. The tires may have come off the ground, a witness said he thought they did, but isn't positive.
Second car was totaled when we running threw some corners. I was behind the car, and saw the entire things, and almost t-boned the car. We're were traveling around 50mph..
When we entered the corner the car looked to be doing fine, but unknown to us there had been resent construction on the road, and there was a metal plate right in the line.
In about the middle of the corner, he hit the plate, the car almost instantly began bouncing, while bouncing he hit the brakes in a attempt to stop or slow the car down, they locked up and he slid into the barrier, the car then bounced off the barrier, and traveled across the road and hit another barrier with the rear end.
That is what I saw, and I maintain he is very lucky the car didn't roll. It looked like it was going to, but didn't. When he went across the lane, I barely missed him.
In the first accident, there was legal action taking by the other drivers which resulted in about a 50k payout from his insurance company. Driver of the jetta complained of bad neck and back pain, as did the driver of the EF. This also resulted in a Negligent driving ticket, which cost him his license for 6 months. His insurance damn near doubled, and was required to have SR22 for a year, (had other tickets also)
The second accident resulted in 1 completely ****ing destroyed 99 SI, driver has burns on his arms, and face from the air bag. He was not given a ticket for the accident, the responding officer felt the accident was enough of a lesson.
Thankfully no one was seriously hurt in the accidents, but it could have been very bad.
if this isn't enough to steer you in another direction, then I don't what will.
Look at Tein S tech. It's a low spring, but with soft rates. You need to think of your baby riding the car, not how it looks!
