Default newb tach question

I am helping a friend work on his car and he has a 94 civic ex with an H22a motor swap. im helping him install a tach and need help knowing the CORRECT (proper and safe) way to install the signal wire to the engine. I know you are supposed to tap into the negative side of the coil but it has an internal coil in the distributor. If anyone can help me that would be great thanks.

The tach signal comes from the igniter unit via the blue wire.

Yes, there's a tach connector there under the hood. You should also find the same blue tach wire at the rear of the cluster.

great guys thanks a lot for all the info on this. im a mustang guy and its a lot easier on those. But i do have another question for you guy that you might know the answer to.

He has been noticing lately that the rev limiter in the car will sometimes engage at different RPM's. what could cause this to happen?

Is this according to a stock or aftermarket tach, if its the factory one it could just be acting up, nothing new for a honda tach
