Default How to tight should a timing belt be? 98 civic.

Im in the middle of doing a timing, water pump on my 98 dx. (d16y7)

I can move the belt back and forth about 10mm, or less. Is this right?

I tried and tried and I get the belt any tighter. OEM belt/pump, used orginal tensiosor, no clue if it's OEM. It has already been tighened.

How tight should the belt be? Or is mine fine?

Thanks guys!!

Is your tensioner loosening up when you loosen the bolt? On my 99 D16y7 I have around 6-7mm deflection on the front side(meaning side of the belt facing the front of car) of the timing belt, but I have never seen anything in the FSM stating tolerances.

Yea, it does move around a little. Just enough to pull the belt off easily..

I'll check mine again now.

Ok, I just checked it again, and if I push hard on it, I get aprox 11mm.

Not pushing hard, I can get about 6-7 like you stated.

I have been looking around, and can't find anything. My dad's freind said if I can twist the belt 45* or less I am ok.

Thank you

Than I would say you're fine, My belt has 80K on it and has the same play as yours does.

Ok, thanks. I am just a little nervous about it, I've never done a timing belt before.
