Timing belt walking
I recently changed the timing belt on my B18a1.
The car cranks and runs, but the timing belt is walking inwards towards the motor. I have the washers in place on the crank and they are in the correct direction. There is proper tension on the belt and I followed the instructions of setting the motor at TDC, turning the cranks ccw 3 teeth, then tighten the tensioner to 40lbs.
The belt is wering into the timing belt cover, so something is definitely amiss.
The old timing belt did NOT have this issue, and I've not changed the water pump or tensioner pulley (the old belt snapped).
Input?
Ideas?

What brand belt is it. Maybe there is a flaw in the construction that makes it want to move axially. Never seen that happen with all the correct parts installed like you already checked. I also like to use only oem belts.
It's a "Dayco" brand belt.
If I drive the car, it runs great, but upon inspection, the belt is getting very close to the motor. I fear that it will eventually start running into the water pump bolts.
I'm not driving the car, as I'm currently frustrated with it, so I know when to quit. Upon your input, I may turn the belt around tomorrow and see if it runs out towards the other direction.

Yea that dayco belt is your problem. I have one that I used to check V2V on a set of cams because I didn't want to spend twice as much on an oem belt only to ruin it by clamping it with vice grips. When I pre assembled the engine with it because my oem parts order hadn't come it the belt walked to the inside like crazy just turning the engine by hand. Stick to OEM Honda or Gates.
****...ok.
After the timing belt snapped, I wanted to see if the motor survived, so I just grabbed the quickest option. Looks like I will be making a return trip to Advanced Auto tomorrow.
Thanks.

I just switched from a dayco to gates on my gsr, 3 or so days use i never saw any belt walk fwiw. If i remeber there is a way to lock the ls cams in place rather than vise grips. I also do not like the 3 ccw teeth method it left to much slop in my gsr. I had to "help" the new spring with tention in order to get proper tention
