Default Cheap Sedan build

Here's my 1990 Sedan. Bought it this past Feb for $300. Great Kijiji find. Guy had it posted for $500, and the mileage was advertised at 149,000 kms. Go to see it, found out it ran like well warmed over turd, and it had 160,000 kms. So I lowball him at $200 and work it out to $300..

Towed to my shop and discovered why it ran like ***...water pump broke on the housing, caused the belt to jump, and cylinder 1 exhaust valves to make contact....The owner obviously brought it to a shop who did the timing belt and did not tension the belt properly....

So, I pulled the head, sent it out to a rebuilder to get re&re'd. Rest of the valves were good, so replaced the two **** valves, hot tanked, and decked the head. Fresh felpro HG with updated bolts and the head was on..NGK wires and plugs.

Installed a new water pump, idler pulley, timing belt. Thankfully, the alternator was recently rebuilt, so one less thing to deal with. Installed all new belts (ps/alt/ac). Bled and flushed the power steering. Bought off ebay a stainless steel header for $44 - delivered to my door..CAI was $40..Battery was frozen...replaced with an AC Delco for $75..

Updated all the suspension, had a buddy stateside who shipped me up a set of Gabriel Ultras for $114 - delivered - for all four. Local guy off craigslist sold me a set of new coilover sleeves for $50..ordered new brakes all around (pads/rotors/shoes/brake cylinders/hard lines) for $60. Stainless brake lines all around for $45...Fabbed up extended top hats for the rears (cost $0) and used accord struts up front (as they are nearly 2" shorter than the civics..) Dropped the car at little under 2" as this is my daily driver..

Rear lCA bushings were on their way out, so instead of wasting time with a torch and an press, I lopped off the bolts with the torch and installed some Blox lca's I picked up for a customer (but they flaked) for $75....

Rad was starting to weep, so a new fullsize rad was installed..$90..

Replaced the complete exhaust with 2" for $60...had a magnaflow universal cat leftover from my Fox body turbocoupe project of years gone by, cut off the flanges off the original cat, and welded it to the cat...

Wheels came off an escort GT that I picked up off a kid on Kijiji for $50..reprayed them bronze and shod them with Michelin rubber I picked up for $100...contrary to what some may say, these rims will bolt on, just have to use a 3mm spacer...

Original front bumper was cracked and one turn signal was damaged. Replaced with an SI bumper and lip with fresh turn signals for $40...

Just recently swapped out the leaky IACV valve - $25, and worn master cylinder - $30.

Paint is original, and there is zero rust. Yes the Ebrake is fully functional.

Runs strong, and keeping it dpfi as fuel prices are getting heady..oh yes, forgot one big thing..the a/c blows ICE cold!!!

Total cost, including initial cost of car - $1500

Pix..sorry for the iphone pix..

Thanks, this is my 2nd Civic project, first one was an '87 sedan..

Here's a few more pics of the suspension, brakes..

Gotta like the fact that the aftermarket is so plentiful and cheap nowadays than back in the day..

Update:

After driving this wee beast over the past while, quelling stupid oil pan leaks et all, I was wondering why I started consuming oil??

Then once I pushed her up to 4500+ and caught a glimpse of what was coming out my tailpipe through my rear view mirror....

I'm burning oil...merde! *****! crap!

Since it is only visible when I'm over 3600 rpm, I'm thinking rings starting to go...betting good money that the cause was due to the previous owner not attending to the oil pan leak and probably running the engine with low or next to no oil..stupid bastard!

Alas, I have to deal with it..

So...

I snagged a rebuilt d16A6 block with only 80,000kms on it for $60.. Grabbed a pm3-18 head with only 10,000 kms on it for $125 (and the gent threw in new accel 8mm wires!)

So, headgasket, new studs, new timing belt, waterpump, tensioner and voila, a new heart is ready to the transplanted!

190 in every cylinder...will be much better than the oil gobbler I have now..

So yesterday was tire day from hell...

Drop my kids off at school, half a block from my house I hear a thumping out on the rear passensger side. So I pull it into the drive way and find this in my rear tire...

Nice eh? 1" self tapping...Lovely neighbours who sweep this stuff onto the road.

Sigh...

So the rims I was running were shod with winters, so not so bad. But the hole it left in the tire was pretty large. So...I grab some 14's that I got off a guy on Kijiji for $70 (all straight, 1 new tire - the rest total garbage) and a pair of 60 series tires that have 80% tread ($25 off a local trader..) and went to the shop and installed them....

Coming back home from work late at night, I hit a small piece of metal on the highway, which imbeds itself in my fresh front tire...F**U**C**K!!!

So this morning, I head to a used tire place and grabbed some 90% tread Capitols (installed and balanced for $40 cash!) and now I'm rocking 14's..

again my apologies for the quality iphone pix...

Top end needs some fine tuning, will get to that this weekend. Nothing that a couple of wrenches and a feeler gauge can sort out.

Runs much better now...half the valves were loose . All now down to spec. More power - well as much as a d16a6 with dpfi can provide. Now have to replace the gaskets for header as the main manifold gasket is crap, and the other between the downpipe is also falling apart..New ones on order, should arrive within a week. If it's not one thing, it's another...

Thanks, I plan to keep it that way.

Replaced the throttle body with a much fresher one today. Much better response. Throttle shaft is a little sticky, but I just spayed tons of liquid wrench on it so I turns much smoother and will work better with more use (the assembly had been sitting on a shelf for about 5 years..)

NB: Don't bother replacing the TPS with a Omni Power unit. They don't work, turn the wrong way. Dunno what DX that is for, but it sure is NOT for our EF/ED's.

Jealous of the deals you're getting out there. I'm in an area in BC where everyone drives a BMW or porsche and junk 50% tires are apparently worth like $150.

There's quite a few out here, so the availability of parts is good, but Ebay has provided many good deals as well. Funny, I was back home on Vancouver Island, and all I saw were tons of late 60's, early 70's cars just sitting in yards..Christ, If I only had a flatbed, I would have snagged a few and peddled them here for $$$$...

I get about 725 - 735kms per tankful. Based on a 12 gallon tank. 100/kmh average - mostly highway. Thats pretty close to 38-40mpg. I don't run tires wider than 60 series. And I don't have a big honkin stereo..
