Default belt broke--now what--need options please

i have a 93 civic ex that was bought in 95 with 40k on it. had the belt and water pump changed at 110k. i'm now around 175 and the belt broke on the freeway doing 65mph.--had it towed guy says around a grand to fix maybe more, depends on the amount of damage--i have done alot of work on cars in the past so here is the question with this one--it has always run very well--and very well maintained--i don't want to spend that kind of money on it--but not ready to scrap it yet--should i take the head off and see how bad the valves are first--or just re time and put another belt on and see what it does--heard you have about a 50/50 chance of doing major damage to the head--trying to way my options now that what is not suppose to happen (letting the belt break) has happened--thanks for any help or suggestions

Well since you know what you're doing, sounds like it would be cheaper to pull the head off and see if you can see any damage that's been done. If so, new d-series engine or head, and if not replace the belt.

Why pull the head if you don't know theres a problem ? Put a new belt on and see how it runs and go from there. Start with the easy route than work to the harder route if the other one fails.

This is true, I guess you're going to have to get another belt regardless
