1988 CRX SI Fuel Problem
I have an '88 CRX SI that will run fine if the gas tank is full or 3/4 to 2/3 full, but will spit and buck as the fuel level drops.
I did a fuel pressure test a few weeks ago and it was low - 27 pounds - but subsequent to that have replaced the pump. The problem persists, although the engine does have more power with the new pump than before.
A couple of months ago, I replaced the fuel filter and air filter, which it needed anyway, but it had no effect on the problem.
Usually when the spitting/skipping starts, the "check engine" light will come on and the error code will be one blink showing an oxygen related problem. I'm almost certain that the fuel system is sucking air in when the fuel level declines, but can see no obvious problem. I drained the tank, thinking that maybe it was a moisture problem, but it wasn't.
I had an idea that maybe it was some kind of weird electrical problem caused by the gauge sender when it got to a certain level, but that doesn't make much sense and doesn't account for the error code.
I'm almost to the point of buying a new tank and replacing it, but I don't like to trouble shoot by replacing parts randomly. Is it possible that the tank has a baffle somewhere that is prohibiting fuel from covering the pickup unless the tank is nearly full? Has anybody encountered this problem before? Any guesses?
